Well I don't know of the roots of the Philosopher's Stone, but I remember it
closely linked with the alchemists of the middle ages - here in Germany I
think nearly every Earl and Duke had "his" alchemist who was condemmned to
find the Philosopher's Stone. So if you want to know about the origins of
the Philosopher's Stone you have to find the origins of the belief and
rituals of the alchemists in the middle ages.
The following is pure speculation: I think the alchemists got their
knowledge from wise men in the Greek culture. And they got THEIR knowledge
from Egypt. You can follow the "trace" of "high" cultures backwards
into
time: From Egypt to Babylonia (sp?), from Babylonia to Persia, from Persia
to India and (if you believe in that) from India to Atlantis.
So both of you could be right. Okay, China's not India but it's close :)
