Well, I went and did it ...

A friend of mine is putting on a HUGE rave, and since I'm doing his webpage
and some other graphic design for him, he is allowing me to stage a
live-action Shadowrun game DURING the rave!
"As long as they pay their admission and don't cause trouble, you can do
whatever you want."

WOW!

Now my problem is what the heck kind of plot do I run?

Here's the details on what I have to work with.
I have a minimal staff of people to work with, maybe 3 people to act as
NPC's.
The Phreak Show is a 2 floor venue, seperated by a spiral staricase, so I
could conceivably have two plots/factions working at once.
The club hosting the show will be packed, and things will be loud!
We MUST NOT disturb any other patrons of the show, so running gun battles
with NERF weapons is O-W-T, out!

Right now I'm tending toward am attack and defend style mission, with two
teams.
One team will be assigned to covertly guard one of my NPC "Targets"
Team Two will need to assassinate said target. The contract says SILENTLY,
so they will need to slip them something in a drink, or use another method
of whacking the target which will not cause problems in the club.

I'd appreciate any suggestions you may have as to plot/details, things I'm
overlooking?

Oh yeah, add some SPOILER SPACE to the replies, so Bull doesn't look! ;-)
Odds are he'll be playing in this one.
Oh yeah ... If any of you are interested in either the SLARP, or the rave,
drop me a line privately for more info.

Oooh, cool. Too bad I know you aren't anywhere near SoCal or I'd be there.
A Rave AND Shadowrun. Too cool.

Okay, you've got a huge group of people who are non-participants, all the
other ravers.

Imagine what sort of shadowrun would be pulled in say, Dante's Inferno or
something. LOTS of NPCs that you don't want to mess with.

So obviously guns and such are out.

Lots and lots of RP is in.

I would think that running a "meet" to start things off would be totally cool.

Let them do some legwork. Meeting other contacts, making phone calls, that
sort of thing. If you've got some cell phones amongst you (most plans have
free or discounted weekend rates), that makes this easier and more realistic.

And you are probably right, some sort of assassination might be ideal,
since it can remain nice and quiet amongst all the booming bass. I would
be careful though about slipping anything into someone's drink. Wouldn't
look too good, you know? More than a few people are paranoid about that
sort of thing right now.

Damn. I wish you/this rave/SLARP was close enough to me so that I could
attend. It would seriously rock.

Egads. I would have thought by now everyone would have heard of raves.
Even my totally square engineer father knows what one is. No offense
intended Tim, I'm just amazed is all.

A rave, which is almost a passe term, is essentially an underground dance
party.

Extremely loud techno dance music (everything from old school Detroit house
to jump step to speed garage to anthem to drum'n'bass) spun almost always
by DJs and not live bands. Many many people dancing to it all, dressed in
all sorts of very odd clothing. Some of these people may be under the
influence of various hallucinogenics, LSD, peyote and excstasy I think are
still the favorites. Alcohol is typically rare, except for the fraternity
idiots that show up (I was in a house so I can talk smack). A significant
gay/lesbian/bisexual/ambisexual presence; often a place where cross
dressing can be seen.

There's a certain 60's hippie vibe to it all, since it's about peace and
love and joy to a great degree. But the music is often very aggresive,
with DJ's upping the pitch on their wheels of steel, taking a record to
180+bpm to drive the dancers into a sort of frenzy.

There may or may not be a license for anyone to be in that particular
space, so some raves are essentially illegal. Most are held in abandoned
warehouses, but not always; some are held in dance clubs, a few have held
in public places like amusement parks or sports arenas.

They often start about 10pm, but the action doesn't really start until
about/after midnight and sometimes will go to dawn. Most folks leave
between 3 and 4 am though.

Lets see, what else...lots of flashing lights...insanely beautiful
people...just plain insane people...loud loud music...lots of fun if you've
got the energy. It's a very open attitude in general, very tolerant of
most non-aggressive things. Dance like a spaz? No one will even laugh.
Fruitier than a neighborhood fruit stand? No one will care. Dance around
naked? Well, people will watch but you are probably relatively safe and
you may cause other folks to get naked too.

I think that about covers it. I was part of the birth of the rave scene
when it was just getting started in Arizona, about 1993. LA and Europe had
been doing it for a few years by then; England I think started it all in
the late 80s.

Still got questions?

Cops? Okay, I'll buy that. Especially if they just give a warning and go
away.

Ambulances? No. That means it really sucks for someone.

Fire trucks? No. Almost guaranteed that if there isn't a fire in
progress, they are there to shut it down for fire hazard violations. Which
is how legal and licensed raves are shut down usually.

Practically anyone else is welcome though, as long as they behave
themselves and don't get all drunk and macho and threatening and stuff; a
bit odd for *me* to say that (given how aggressive and macho I can be), but
a rave isn't supposed to be aggresive, it's supposed to be about simply
having a good time, in peace. A bit like any party really. ;-)

*sigh*

I haven't gone dancing in months. Need to change that, and soon.

Unless you living in a cave like that abortion bomber dude in Carolina (or
wherever he is) there's got to be places for you to go.

It might mean a drive of an hour, maybe two, but there's gotta be places to
go.

Oh, I know, most people gasp in horror at an hour drive just to go dancing
or something. But growing up in LA, it was just second nature. It's
really nothing to have to drive a half hour somewhere, and it's not that
big a deal to drive an hour for something or someone. When I lived in
Tucson and we wanted to rave or go to concerts or simply attend a real
dance club, we'd drive the hour and half plus to Phoenix. And then, at
three in the morning or seven or whatever we'd drive the hour and a half
back to Tuscon.

But the point is Tim, there surely must be someplace you (and the little
lady; I seem to recall you're married but I'm not positive) could head out
to for a depraved decadent night out in the Big City.

The one where Gary (wearing "the suit"), Dorothy, Tony, Deborah,
and one of Deborah's student friends go to a rave and get
hopelessly lost on the way there. No idea what it's called (if
anything), but it was in the last season, a few episodes before the
thing with the barbeque and the fence at the back of the garden :)
