Alright chummers, got a question for ya. Where in the book (SRII) does it
tell about Physical Adepts, can't seem to find it. (bad bad bad bad bad).
A friend of mine, who I'm trying to convert from AD&D, wants to be a
ninja type Runner. Also, does the stealth skill affect the perception
test. It seems to me that it would, but the book (SRII) doesn't seem to
say anything about it. What do ya say?

It starts on page 124 of my hardcover edition, and ends on page 126. Also
see page34 of the Grimoire II for some extra powers, though I think they're
not all that good.

This would be a very nice one as a physical adept, IMHO.

In what way do you mean?

Ah. Now I see what you mean. I'd say it's an opposed test between the
Stealth skill of the character and the Perception of the guard. And, as the
SR2 book explains, in an opposed test the person with the highest number of
successes wins.

As an example, Jane Average rolls a Stealth skill test to get past Joe
Public unnoticed. Her Stealth skill is 5, and Joe's Perception is 4. I'd say
Jane has to roll 4s (Joe's Perception), while Joe has to roll 5s. If both
Jane and Joe roll 3 successes, Jane succeeds (ties go to the "attacker"),
but if Joe rolls 3 and Jane only 2, Joe hears/sees/smells Jane coming. Did
this make it clearer a bit?

It runs into a couple of problems when you begin defaulting to other skills
or attributes though. I think the opposed success test with both sides
looking for a TN of 4 (modified by various effects) is a better solution.

As an example, say we have Paul, the unstealthy, but very quick magician,
who has a Quickness of 10 but no Stealth skill. Say he's trying to sneak past
Mr Bozo the grumpy guard, who has an Intelligence of 3. Paul rolls his 10
Quickness dice against a TN of 8 (base 4 +4 for defaulting), and Bozo rolls
his 3 dice against a TN of 4. This is assuming no modifiers for other
effects such as wounds or visibility. You see the difference between this
and an opposed success test using each others Skill/Attribute as the TN? [If
we were to use your suggested method, then Paul would be needing 7's, and
Bozo 10's].

OK, then let's call it an opposed test between Stealth skill and Perception,
but both against a TN of 4. That should solve it all, wouldn't it?

But before all that, we kick off with a bit of culture...

As far as I can see it would, yeah.
