I didn't understand exactly what type of magic an adept can use. The
book list a bunch of things the Phy Ade can do, but they all involved
improving attributes and something about Fist of Iron.

Think of it this way...
Mages and Shamen express their magical power in an external way, by casting
spells, summoning spirits, and astral projection.

Physical adepts focus their magic internally, magically enhancing stats,
skills and abilities.

Physical adepts use their 6 points, to buy skills like
Improved Reflexes, Pain Resistance, Unarmed +2 Dice,
Thermographic vision, etc etc etc. They don't cast spells.
Adepts (as used in SR2), were a form of magician that
could 1) Only conjure spirits or 2) Only cast spells.
They had limited access to astral space. (I'm ignoring
shamans for this argument).
The advantage in SR2 to an adept is magic was then a lower
priority, letting you pick more points for skills or attributes.
Grimoire 2nd Edition adds initiation, more spells, more PA
powers, and clears up a few things. If your going to use
magic in SR2, I highly recommend it, and later Awakenings.

Physads can use their magic to:
a) improve their attributes
b) improve their skills
c) get pseudo-cyber (stuff like low-light, thermo, direction sense)
d) resist damage (magic resistance, pain resistance, mystic armour)
e) do unique stuff (traceless walk, smashing blow, missile mastery)

That's a pretty basic summary...

That's exactly what they can do...they improve their bodies innately
through magic.

For example, if you spend your 6 points on:

+1 reflexes (+1 initiative die) =1
6 levels Pain resistance =3
Killing Hands Serious =2

You'll have a nicely decent melee combat person (hopefully you'd give
him a high Unarmed Combat score too).

Cyber aside, this guy would easily kill an average person. He's
faster, can ignore most wounds, and does a LOT of damage when he
hits.

But if you try playing someone like this, it should quickly become
obvious how important social skills and thinking abilities are.

Fist of Iron? Huh?

Anyway...adepts refers to several different types of magical sorts, and I
think you've got that much figured out. Physical Adepts do not cast
spells. Their magic is channeled internally, into improving their physical
abilities. This can include Improved Attributes, Improved Skills (such as
Unarmed Combat, very popular for physadepts), Enhanced Senses, Improved
Initiative (affect of Wired Reflexes, just magical), and yes, a Killing
Blow/Death Touch/Fist of Iron type ability.

These "powers" are purchased using the Magic Attribute. The Magic
Attribute does not actually go down, but you are limited to a number of
points equal to it. You do not use Force Points to purchase physical
adepts powers. Those are for magicians purchasing spells only.

The other types of adepts, such as sorcery adepts and conjuring adepts, are
simply limited in the type of magic they can cast. They specialize.
