Kinda like the title, but to be honest I don't think I have any descendants
from Newcastle (I just study here) but you never know. Actually I think my
family does go back a bit trouble is at one stage in the tree there were 3
brothers, all were left an equal amount of the family fortune, 1 became a
barrister, 1 became a doctor and the other became a drunk. Guess which line
I'm descended from :)
As to the pilgrims, my limited knowledge, first off I did hear that they were
rather bad sailors, I think they went round in circles several times which
added weeks to their journey before they reached America. As to the religious
situation, well Henry VIII was as somone said catholic but became protestant.
His son Edward (?, didn't live long anyway) was devoutly protestant, then his
first daughter, Mary, was devoutly catholic, then Elizabeth came along, I
think she was protestant but not devoutly so.
With all this religous to and fro-ing in the country it's not suprising that
some people were alightly annoyed, the Guy Faulkes (sp?) tale is just one
example of that. Britain basically had a traditional catholic part and a new
protestant part. Quite where the pilgrims fit into this religious hotbed of
fanaticism I'm not too sure. It all depends on what religion they were and what
exactly their reasons were for leaving.
Back to Newcastle again though, it's worth noting that if the Pilgrims were
catholic it certainly wouldn't have been the Lord Of Newcastle who was
persecuting them. The Lord Of Newcastle (Duke Of Northumbria is his proper
title I believe) was a devout catholic, in fact he even played a major part in
the Guy Faulkes thing (but that was much later and probably a descendant).
I'll have to read up on this my English history has a few holes in certain
places.
Phill.
