the past, but as a three-month player I wonder what the more experienced
Shadowrunners think of the subject. Why are pistols and accessories in
Shadowrun so darn heavy?
For example: Colt America L36. Eleven-round clip-fed light
semi-automatic. Damage 6L, weight 1kg.
SIG-Sauer P226. Fifteen-round clip-fed heavy
semi-automatic. Damage 9M, weight 0.75kg.
Ares Predator. Fifteen-round clip-fed heavy
semi-automatic. Damage 9M, weight 2kg.
The above shows one of today's premier heavy sidearms, a Shadowrun
backup weapon, and 2050's premier heavy weapon (according to the
triple-B). Notice anything odd? Yes, the SIG is lighter than the
'wimpy' L36, hits as hard and holds as much ammo as the 'intimidating'
Predator, and looks just as cool as either.
Why should pistols sixty years in advance of today's, probably built out
of high-tech composites and plastics, weigh more than today's clunky
steel contraptions? What gives? (And I'm looking for explanations a
character would accept, not Game Balance.)
The same goes for things like sights (especially laser-sights) and
smartlinks. The smart-link would probably be no more than a plug-socket
(or dermal-contact interface) and a small fire-control computer. Given
the presumed state of miniaturization (optical chips etc.) why should a
smart-link assembly weigh a half or full kilo? And sights would surely
shrink from their current bulk to a slim-line deal that wouldn't
compromise concealability.
I eagerly await theories, rationalizations, and corrections. *Sitting
back, waiting for the controversy to start*
