I just thought that I should say that I had never actually seen any of the
Plastic Warriors stuff before, until I downloaded most of it yesterday.
After reading through it, I must say it is a job well done. Good on you
Gurth and everyone else that helped (if they are on the list). They will
become a part of my core sourcebooks.

I have them on my HD formatted like that, and I didn't do them myself.. try
Morrigu's FTP site (Which isn't really a FTP site, but hey). It's on the
webring, somewhere between numbers 100-150. I'm pretty sure that's where I
grabbed the letter version of the PW books :)

Oh don't let Gurth hear you say that... unless he's changed a lot. I STILL
remember the firestorm about that when they came out.

Seriously, though... Someone at the time said they'd convert them, however
if you get the Word 6 version, you can readily reformat them yourself. If
you don't have a copy of Word 6, get the freeware Word 6 Viewer from the
Microsoft web site, change the page setup, and print. It won't be a perfect
job, but it will fit on the page.

Better yet, standardise with the result of the world and print it to A4.

AFAIK the only site that had them converted to Letter format disappeared
without telling me about it :( I don't have the space at my account to out
up two versions of everything; I could get more space but it'll cost way
too much (half the base subscription rate for every 5 MB extra...)

However, re-formatting documents for Letter paper size isn't all that
difficult. It's easiest if you fiddle with the margins so the actual text
area remains the same size as on A4 paper, but that isn't always possible,
mainly for the top and bottom margins. There's a Troubleshooting file on
my page that explains the important things to pay attention to.

The files on my page are in RTF format now, not Word 6 anymore. I changed
them last year or so to make them more easily readable by other word
processors on various OS's. Like I said in another message, it's not
difficult to change them. Mainly it involves adding hard page endings
(usually inserted by pressing Ctrl+Enter) and/or removing them.

Hey guys, tell it to the office printer which doesn't have A4 paper.

(Better yet, don't tell them, as it will become obvious who is
running 100+ page documents off of the office laser printer....)

If anyone converts these files, let me know. I'll put them up on Thor, my
ftp site (thor.flashpt.com). It's slow but has no disk quota. Send me mail
privately.

That's all the same problem, isn't it? You can't find it because nobody
uses it, and nobody uses it because they can't find it...

However, my policy is that if Americans don't bother to make
net.sourcebooks for A4 paper, then I (usually) won't bother making
net.sourcebooks for Letter paper :)

But it differs on the individual level. Some don't use it 'cuz we're
Americans and G*d D**n it the rest of the world better come to our
way. Some of us will acknowledge a standard if the world has it, but
when it requires that we cease to eat to afford that standard....

...which has the minor difference that Letter format can be printed
on A4, but not visa versa....

Thus, if I ever write a net.book, I'll format for letter since it'll
print on both. Of course, I've only ever printed A4 once, so if you
people with the "real" standard can offer a good argument for the
opposite, I'll take the time to reformat and do in both.

Hmm.. I downloaded and printed some of Gurth's net.sourcebooks and
didn't have any problems. I just told Word97 that I was using Letter
instead of A4 and it printed just fine <shrug>.

Those are the annoying ones :)

Those are the over-reacting ones :)

True, but it's not all that handy. Letter is shorter and slightly wider
than A4, so you'll end up with a very large bottom margin, and if the
contents of the Letter page get close to the long edges of the paper, it
won't print everything.

BTW, an HP Deskjet 520 has an additional 6 mm margin on the sides where it
won't print, regardless of paper size. Printing Letter to an A4 paper
effectively chops about a centimeter off of one side, not 6 mm :(

My argument is that it simply works and looks better if you print on the
paper the document is formatted for. Unfortunately that'll mean bringing
out two versions (the more involved option), or setting the margins in
such a way that either paper will work (the easier option).

> (who hasn't written any net.books, so he has an easy time talking)

Trust me, I know what I'm talking about :)

And a Deskjet 500C has a dead area near the bottom. (Which is one reason
why anything I produce in RTF/DOC/PDF has alot of space near the bottom
margin, because I print them on my printer, and want them to look decent
when I do that.. :)

Try tell a HP Laserjet 5. If it's marked as letter, it wants letter.
Period. Sure reformatting works, but so does A4->letter....

Hoi.

As there have been problems accessing Gurth's great Plastic Warriors
Net.Book series, I quickly shoveled free some megabytes of disk space,
and set up a mirror site.

For more info, see
ftp://ftp.informatik.uni-oldenburg.de/pub/roleplay/shadowrun/plastic/

the file 00readme lists all the present formats and books.

First of all thanks to Sascha, and second I'll mention that there are also
links to the individual books there from my site (at least, I hope they
work because I didn't test them...).

Sorry if someone might have already gotten to this, I never got to the
end of the old thread about the A4 formating, but does anyone have a
list of mirrors that have the Plastic Warriors formatted for 8.5"x11"
American Letter. Scanned through em and it looks likle they kick, but I
don't exactly wanna GM next session running back and forth checking

As I said last week or so, the site that held the Letter versions seems to
have disappeared. I am planning on making Letter conversions at some point
in the not too distant future, but ATM I'm a bit busy with other things to
do that right now.

Is there a Postscript A4 version somewhere? Or can it be generated? It
would be easy to convert Postscript A4 to Postcript Letter size. There is
a nice little (gnu)utility called 'psresize' which can do the job.

AFAIK there are no Postscript versions anywhere; I certainly haven't
figured out a reliable way to make them (printing to a file while a PS
printer was selected was suggested to me once, but no PS viewer I had
could make anything out of the resulting files).

I'll most likely do it the old-fashioned way by opening each file in a
word processor, switching the page size to Letter, and adding and
deleting page endings as appropriate.

Disclaimer

These messages were posted a long time ago on a mailing list far, far away. The copyright to their contents probably lies with the original authors of the individual messages, but since they were published in an electronic forum that anyone could subscribe to, and the logs were available to subscribers and most likely non-subscribers as well, it's felt that re-publishing them here is a kind of public service.
