SOmething me and one of my players have been considering; when an astrally
projecting magician's meat body dies they have as many hours as they would
normally have left before returning to their body to avenge their death.
Initiates with the metamagical ability of Possession can enter an astrally
active being's body. They can only possess a host for a number of hours
equal to their initiate grade.

What we have been discussing is do they regain a point of magic every minute
in their own body after astrally projecting or just a body? If this is
possible then a kindly awakened character could allow an an initiate friend
who has lost their body an hour or so about four times a day to stay alive;
it would make a kick ass flaw.

Phil

Let us assume we have a can opener.

IMO, I would not allow this to happen. Once the
clock starts ticking until they die it keeps on
going. I would not allow it to stop at all.
There is a loophole to this though ... quests to
the metaplanes could keep the character going to a
while longer but once the quest is done with then
the character will die.

An interesting twist I just thought of. What if the player goes on a
quest to the metaplanes to search for a "new" body. If the player
succeeds, then he gets a new body but has no control over what type of
body, what condition it's in, or how much time has passed since the
characters death. :)

Of course another possible twist might be for a player to Quest to linger on
after death. The result being a Ghost complete with Haunt &/or Chains to
connect him to his former life. That player who took so much time to learn
and Master his Katana or gave a ring to his love might find himself tied to
the item (or items perhaps).

Just a thought

Except that you need to choose the metaplane you're going to visit before
leaving your body. That becomes a bit hard if you're already in astral
space...

He has to believe in reincarnation first :). And since he'll be
ding this before actually dying, his karma may be a bit on the bad side,
meaning he won't get much of a body. Definitely not a human one; maybe a
dog or some other small mammal (or an iguana, which can be funny :) ).

The good thing, of course, is that he'll retain all knowledge he
had from his "previous life", and magical abilities too.
