Okies, I suppose this might be a spoiler for players who haven't or aren't
allowed to read the Critters book, so

Okay, what gives?

Vampires, right. Classically burst into flames or turn to dust when
exposed to sunlight right?

Then why has the Vampire's (and several other HMHVV infected critters)
Allergy to Sunlight been downgraded in Critters?

It seems the game mechanics have gone from;
"You throw open the shutters. The Vampire howls in pain throwing its arms
up to cover its face as the creatures exposed flesh begins to bubble and
smoke" (Taking a Light Wound every action (10 phases))

to;
"You throw open the shutters. The Vampire scratches the suddenly inflamed
flesh of its exposed neck and says "Look, do you mind shutting those: I
left my analgesic cream in my other suit" " (+1? +3? to Target Numbers?)

Allergy to Sunlight:
Beastie SR2 | Critters
|
Banshee Severe | Moderate
Ghoul Moderate | Mild
Vampire Severe | Moderate
Wendigo Severe | Moderate
|
Dzoo-Noo-Qua Mild | Mild
Loup-Garou Severe | Severe
|
Nosferatu* ? | Severe
Goblins ? | Mild

*I don't own PnAE

The effects of a Moderate Allergy is listed as "touch painful ... yada yada
...If touch is prolonged, the creature suffers an allergic reaction. Add
+2 to the Power of weapons made from the substance."

What exactly is an "allergic reaction" to sunlight, and how is "prolonged
exposure" defined.

"The Vampires eyes puff up and its throat swells "You Cad!" it gurgles,
"They were SUNflower seed biscuits, weren't they! .... now I'm going to
need a shot to suppress this _allergic reaction_" "

Now; if you held the opinion the Vampire should take damage from prolonged
exposure then that sounds like a Severe allergy to me. How do I adjudicate
*allergic reaction*, and *prolonged exposure* without simple categorising
the allergy as Severe after the first Combat Round???

More to the point can anyone offer an explanation as to why these changes
occured?

I'm open to the theory that Vampires are a *weaker* or *thin-blooded(sp?)*
variant of Nosferatu and that explains the differing allergy ratings and
that they might *graduate* to Nosferatu status after 100 years or so but
Critters states that Vamps and Nosfs are created by different strains of
HMHVV so that doesn't scan.

I'd accept that it has something to do with Ordo Maximus. I haven't read
The Terminus Experiment and I only skimmed Threats so I'm not sure what's
going on there.

In short: Why don't Vampires et al burst into flames in sunlight anymore,
dammit?
