OK. I have question for you all. Just what is postscript and why
do I need Goshscript and a ton of fonts to use it. Is postscript a Mac
thing or something? Why is postscript so popular?

PostScript is a publishing "language" that allows you to use drawings, text and
a myriad (oooh neat word!!:) of other functions for page layout. Ghost Script
is a portable interpreter for those of us who don't have the equipment much
less the cash to buy the equipment for printing these things. The fonts allow
a better interpretation of the files...all postscript (.ps) files are are
_very_ large ascii text files with lines of "source" code that Ghost Script or
your postscript printer interpret into a "graphic" format that is far superior
to many word processors...unfortunately the cost of the programs to write .ps
files are enormous at current....

Postscript was originally a type of printer put out by someone who I don't know.
The term post script now refers to the printer control language that was
invented by these people, much as PCL5 was invented by Hewlett Packard.

It was designed to tell a laser printer how to format a document correctly, and
allowed the user to print the info to a file that could later just be copied to
a postscript printer, again like PCL5. If your printer does not understand post
script, then you will need a piece of software on your PC that can translate the
formatting commands. If your printer does understand Postscript, then it
already has the software built in.

Postscript is now owned by Adobe, and they were probably the guys that invented
it.

Sorry for being long winded, but I work as a Technical Support Rep.

Anybody out there know of a utility or someother method to convert from
PostScript level 2 to PostScript level 1? The guys in the lab are
getting tired of us using the laser printers in the lab (the only level
2's available...) They don't mind us using the general level one
though (that and it'll actually print on both sides of the page...8)

So, anybody have one? Or know where I could get my grubby little
mitts on one?

I hate to bring this subject up again, but I lost all of my

I am in desperate Need of a ghostscript file.

Ghostscript for DOS or Microsoft Windoze 3.x is avaliable from my
FTP site, 'cais.com', in the directory '/usr/jdfalk/gs'. Most of the
avaliable fonts are there as well, in two files.
For those who don't know, Ghostscript is a Postscript interpreter
for people without Postscript software. Postscript is a complicated and
IMHO unweildy (but, nevertheless, the best) printer language, which allows
any program to print to any high-quality printer. It does more than that,
of course, but that's the basics of it.
If you have any trouble accessing the files in my site, contact
me, <jdfalk@****.com>. If you don't know how to use FTP, contact your
systems' support people -- that's their job.
