Alright, I've recently purchased MITS and glanced through sections
during classes. I've started to create a mage/enchanter character and
was going to give her an ally spirit. The idea behind the spirit would
be to bond it to an iron wireframe man, about 8 inches tall, give it
only sorcery and enchanting, and make it tend my radical creations while
I did other things ( which should work, if it has enchanting >= mine ).
My question is: do ally spirits only have access to the powers in the
ally spirit section, or could I make it a type of spirit ( say spirit of
the earth ) and turn it into an ally? I realize that free spirit powers
would be off limits ( how great would if be if my ally could make gold
and silver and mercury and iron for me to turn into radicals? :) ) but
what about normal spirit powers? If I could use them, how much would
they cost in karma to add? Thanks, and keep in mind I haven't had a
chance to read all of MITS and have never played a mage. :)

By the book, you can't do this. Ally spirits can only be given the powers
specifically listed for Allies. And the only magical power you can give
an Ally is Sorcery. I considered this for one of my old characters, but
realized it wasn't possible. Of course you can give it mundane skills
like Talismongering, and have it gather materials for you. But it can't
use any magical skills other than Sorcery.
