Hi !
Recently there have been some discussions about the possibility of
using religion as a source for magic and creating a character
class similar to the priest which most FRP systems include.
I think if you use this kind of magic, you could easily endanger
the hole SR timeline. Just think of the power the RCC would have if
only a few percents of their priests could use magic just because of
their strong believe in God. They would be a strong force in future
history, just as every other of the big religions.
On the other hand you'll miss much fun if you don't allow magic coming
from religions with roots younger than 5500 years. Imagine your party
visiting Egypt. No power in the pyramids ? No power coming from the
sphinx ? No dog headed high priest wielding fearful spells at you ?
That's impossible. Or try to involve the cthulhu mythos without allowing
priests. What about a mad fundamental christian priest with a powerful
focus in the shape of the cross fighting a vampire ? BTW, the druidic
cult places on the British isles are not older than 5500 years referring
to radiocarbonmethod.
So I think you should allow priests in your world, but make some
restrictions. Religion with its books and rules certainly doesn't offer
the direct emotional approach of the shaman. On the other hand the
scientific way of the hermetics is difficult, too, because real science
requires a free mind without religous prejudices. So a priest certainly
only can use magic when it is for the purpose of the religion. Not for
himself, not for the party, not for anything else. Additionally in very
large religious communities, as christianity for example, this use of
magic is blocked by the hierarchic and dogmatic structure, which leads
the members of these communities to look for the force in the next rank
above but not in oneself. In these communities only a few loners or members
of small sects may use magic.
But what about the gods themselves ? They could be very powerful beings
on a metaplane which just cannot be reached by todays magicians and who
cannot (or don't want to) reach our plane as well. They may act through
their minions (angels, demons, spawn of cthulhu, the sphinx...) though, but
this may also be restricted in some way. Everything just IMHO, of course.

Christian,
I think you are on the right track with priests, but....
First, druids are explained as being basicly shaman's. Therefore would
it not be logical to say that ant egyptian "dog-headed priest" might also
be classified as one. The egyptian panthanon was based much like the
druidic/shamantic one in SRII. Create a few totems and...viola'..instant
fanatical priests. OOOHHH, and think how interesting a run you could have
in egypt!!

Since I gamemastered a run which dealt with religious fanatics trying to
cleans and purify the world,I've never stopped wondering how a priest in
shadowrun should be laid out as an archetype. When designing the
adventure-plotline I just did some basic features-enough satisfy my
gamers-but I think it should be possible to play a priest as well.
The most crucial aspect of priests is their apparent difference to other
practicioners of magic in regards to conjuring and enchanting. No other
magician can conjure an angel,or enchant a holy symbol. Also something like a
crucifix should not be subject to astral attacks. If it were, why would it
then be able to help against witches and demons?
I would be glad if you could give me some suggestions how to design rules
for playing priests.

Well, I have thought about that some times, but always rejected the
idea. FASA sure did. Although the catholic church(christianity n general)
does approve of the usage of magic, they are not a tradition in
themselves. But if you want one, make it a totem and do not chnage rules
overmuch. I guess god's shamen would have advantages in casting health
and combat spells(God's mercy and wrath). They would probably summon
normal spirits but their subconscious would "shape" them like angels.
Holy items would still be subject to astral attacks(all magic is) but
then a lot of role-playing and world view comes in, one of the reasons I
would not recommend a God priest. Would could be good is a priest(with al
his beliefs) that is a hermetic or chaman(the oldest religous orders
practiced the cabal you know). Remember that shamanisn is NOT a religion
and that most surviving religion have adapted their tenets to fit magic
in them.

>[stuff about priests in Shadowrun]

I have made (not used) a priest character in Shadowrun. What I did is used
a hermetic mage (that's what they are, really) and defined some of his
characteristics in a priestly manner. Crucifix/Rosary = focus. Rosary =
reusable fetish. All kinds of things like that.

Either in the Grimoire or NAGM it talks about the Church and its place in
S-run. They frown heavily on the use of elementals/spirits, so some would
be sorcery adepts out of choice or training (they simply were taught that
they should not conjure spirits, so they don't). They could and would,
however, know how to banish/control spirits of all sorts (exorcism-type
stuff) and would be very good at it (concentrate conjuring skill).

One of the most important things to remember in dealing with the church is
the fact that they lost a lot of power during the Awakening. But you also
have to think that maybe they've had access to this power for longer than
most of the world. Think about a group that knows some of the most powerful
of spells and has known them for thousands of years (super spike baby-esque,
except these people just wrote book after book on it and passed it down from
generation to generation while the super spikes just lived through all the
years). How much magickal knowledge lies in monastaries worldwide?
Probably more than most would want to think...

Also, it is the single largest magickal group in existence. The resources
and knowledge of literally hundreds of thousands is at the fingertips of a
priest. Not even the Megacorps/Native Americans have groups with that kind
of power. Well, maybe the NAN lands, but they don't have the resources that
the church does.

I dont think that you need any extra rules, just take a look at this one :)

The Priest

Picture this, you are sitting in your favourite bar enjoying your
synthadrink (yeah right!) when this weirdo suddenly walks up to you
and asks you for a donation for the local church!
Now most people including yourself would normally just plant their fist or
some other even less friendly part of their anatomy in this jerks face, but
what if you got this really strange gut feeling like this chummer really means
it?
To make things worse you actually like him, even though he is dressed all
in leathers he's got this geeky air about him. He actually looks like as if
he'd sooner help you than kick you if you were lying on the pavement with
your guts spilled out in front of you.
You'r fragged if you know why, but you find yourself reaching in and taking
out a bill then stuffing it in the donation box the guy is holding. As if
getting your money wasnt enough, the guy actually has the nerve to make fun
of you, yeah right "God bless you too dude." you respond and cant help but
wonder whether he really meant it or not...

Quotes:

"Please. These people are poor, and are unable to meet your demands."

"Heaven and Hell await you, son. You must choose, but I am sure that
God will have mercy on your soul."

"Mother of God, the community needs this food. How can you allow
it to be thrown out?"

"No, we have nothing for you to steal. Perhaps you might make a donation
to the people instead?"

"Meditate on this while you heal, my child."

"The Angels of the Lord attend me and my needs."

(The Quotes are from the "Imigrant Sreet Priest" archetype from NAGEE 2)

Most of these people have various personal debts to the priest, others
simply came to know him because of their "unconventional" line of business
and came to like his naive nature inspite of his repeated attemts to make
them change their ways.

2 x Gangs (Local Gangs)
The priest has saved the lives of many gangmembers thereby earning their
trust and respect. The gangs will often come to him with their wounded
but will also look out for him. As a matter of fact at least one gangmember
from at least one of the two gangs should be in the priests immediate vincinity
as long as he stays in the gangs turf.

Buddy - Dog Street Shaman
The shaman stumbled in the priests building accidentaly one night in
an atempt to hide from the corporate forces pursuing him. The priest
took him in, hid him and helped him to recover from his considerable injuries.
