I'm just kinda starting on one. I've decided that instead of making a
windows-only GUI (b/c that's the only machine I have), I'm doing it
all in Java. I've got an excellent program (IBM VisualAge) and if I
ever put a significant amount of time into this, I think I can,
indeed, get one working. I have the idea of the GUI in my head and I
think I'm sure how everything will fit together, but nothing that
works yet.

I've also decided that before I put any more time into the CharGen,
I'm going to do a CyberDeck pricer/builder. I should have that out in
a week or so, (I'm buzy this week.)

I don't have a characer generator as such,.. but I do have an
Excel 97 spread that I put together to help me out. It does
some of the calulations and such..

Someone asked this not too long ago...

Pocket Secretary (PS) was the origional Character Generator for SR2...
and was funky do daa :> But hasnt been updated as yet. The if's and
why's and how's are being debated so sit tight or write your own ;>
heheh

AdamJ (Assistant FL) was the origonal writter of PS. I know his site
has some info on when and why he stopped making an SR3 release of it,
so check there... It will probably be the first place to have info on
the new one if and when it comes out. Or here ;>

There was a SRCG program on the net also, i think i got to it from the
Shadowrun WEbring but im not sure... and it was still SR2, and may
have been shareware, although how that happens with a product lisenced
to someone else i dont know.

Have a good day!

Well it looks like I'm going to break down and make one. I didn't before
because there was stuff out there, but know I got a player who was making
SR3 characters fine until he found some SR2 character generator and now
he's messing everything up and trying to use net books which I don't
allow...*sigh*...but I got plenty of other stuff on my plate so dont expect
it soon.

has a shareware Char gen program available.
it works for SR3 as well as SR2. It also has a function that allows
what net books (or canon books for that matter) are allowed to be
used.
The download is a beta, but he has an update feature that should bring
it up from 1.4B to ver 1.4.6.

try the two mirrors that he has up.
a Geocities site, and one other.
failing that, drop him a line and tell him the problem.

(First off, please quote what you're replying to. In this case I knew right
away, but in the other busier threads, it can be alot more difficult to
figure out what you're talking about)

I believe that Mike Hartmann is working on a new version of his chargen,
and has been for awhile.. must have run into major time constraints, as he
does have a new job that is a fair ways away from his home, I believe.

I've been toying around with the idea of working on a chargen again. Been
tossing the idea back and forth with a couple people on IRC, and hopefully
developing in tandem a version for *nix (his side) and windows (my side),
which can share data files, read each others characters, etc.

Is there enough demand to make this worth my time? Would people tie me to a
stake if I asked for a nominal shareware donation, if they liked the
program? (NO plans to turn into into nagware, crippleware, etc, but I
wouldn't mind a few bucks or an OOP book, something like that, just to
justify my time..)

Replies should probably go private, unless it's something that could use
further discussion on the list.

I don't mind passing around that spread sheet, but you guys
are gonna' have to ask me in private mail... the above is an
example of why I can't tell who ask what.

Would there be an interest in making character formats
standardized? I keep trying to write one but something keeps sucking
away my motivation every time I get stuck on something. It would be
nice to have a data file and character file format that everyone could
use.

That's what we're working on now. Get the file formats finalized (XML
DTDs), throw them up on the web, and then anyone can use them, which would
hopefully make it possible for say, The Shop to export according to the
DTD, and then a character generator could import that vehicle so you can
add it to a character, for example.

Where can I read up on XML and the unfinalized formats?

http://www.xmlinfo.com is a pretty decent and well organized resource. We
don't have the unfinished formats online yet, since they really -are-
unfinished, and we're not sure where they're going to end up online.
