Subject: Projection and Perception / Spell drain options

First I want to say that this post may be a bit munchkinous but it has
some redeeming qualities in there somewhere and was written with good
intentions :)

Okay, Nexx's critter power post gave me an idea ... what if the Immortal
Elves were just Physical Adepts / Physical Mages with the Immunity to Age
power bought to Immortality Levels? This also got me thinking about the
only book I've read with IEs/Harlequin is the Dragon Heart Trillogy and I
also have Harlequin's Back (Is the title a take off on Lobo's Back?) ...
In both cases, he never pojects per se (though there were extuenating
circumstances :) instead he used a ritual to project ... I thought I'd
make up stats for the ritual (for use by lesser IEs and magical groups,
not PCs ...).

Okay, first we have to design the spell then say it MUST be cast in
ritual ...
Astral Projection (singular)
Manipulation Spell
Major Mental Change (M)
Deep Mind Interaction (+2/S)
Sustained Spell (+3/S)
Limited Range (+3/M)
Voluntary subject Required (+3/M)
Bonus Game Effect -Astral Projection [very involved/complex] (+3/D)

Type: Mana
Range: Limited
Target: 10-Essence (For Living Beings) or Object Resistance Table (for
objects)
Duration: Sustained
Drain: ([F/2]+3)D

Astral Projection (plural)
Manipulation Spell
As Above (+3/D)
Area of Effect (+3/D+1)

Type: Mana
Range: Limited
Target: 10-Essence (For Living Beings) or Object Resistance Table (for
objects)
Duration: Sustained
Drain: ([F/2]+5)D or ([F/2]+5)D+1 (see below)

Astral Projection (Personal)
Manipulation Spell
Major Mental Change (M)
Deep Mind Interaction (+2/S)
Sustained Spell (+3/S)
Limited Range (+3/M)
Personal Spell (+3/L-2)
Bonus Game Effect -Astral Projection [very involved/complex] (+3/L)

Type: Mana
Range: Limited
Target: 10-Essence (For Living Beings) or Object Resistance Table (for
objects)
Duration: Sustained
Drain: ([F/2]+3)M (because Light was too little for this spell ... even
so, I'm leaning towards serious drain ...)

Overdrain optional Rule: In the spell design, if the drain level goes
over deadly, the spell drain has overdrain instead of increasing the
target number by 2 ... Overdrain must by reduced (2 successes per level
of overdrain) before normal drain can be resisted otherwise it goes
straight into overflow. For example the AoE Spell above would have a
drain code of ([F/2]+5)D+1 which means the caster must roll 2 successes
to reduce the spell from D+1 to D and 2 more to reduce it to S. How you
handle the overdrain is up to you, it can be either be 1 box per level
or staged normally ... (ie option 1: 1 level of overdrain fills 1 box, 2
levels fills 2 boxes; option 2: 1 level does a light wound, 2 levels does
a moderate ...)

Astral Perception Optional rule: non-physical adepts can use astral
perception but must resist 3M drain to do so ...

All this is just a bit of brainstorming and is probably unbalanced
(except the overdrain bit :)

Incidentally, if you feel like developing a personal spell that is
_incredibly_ cheap to cast, try designing it yourself, and not only make it
personal, but give it a "very specific target" modifier... yourself. Even if
someone gets a hold of the formula, they can't use it for themselves (without
altering the very specific target), and it _really_ drops the drain code...

Nexx, who has munchkin ideas... but never uses them

I think I can arrange for some -VERY- big stones to be found after reading
that last part. Interesting, very interesting...Immortality that is "aquired"
by many. Would make that painting all that more impressive.

Page 123 grimmy:
"Personal Spell (-3 Drain Levels: ... the Touching Required modifier does
not apply. Nor does the vouluntary Subject Required modifier apply --
the magician presumably wants to cast the spell on himself."

It doesn't say *anything* about restricted/very restricted targets ...
Note that Voluntary Subject + Touch Required + Very Restricted Target =
-3 Drain Levels so I think it was intended that Personal Spells are
nothing more than the above restrictions on a spell ...

Uhm, ... What painting? I probably have seen something about what you're
talking about if it's in a major sourcebook (except Tir Tairngire ...).
I just need more info to narrow it down ...
