I've been watching the discussion and debate on this topic since
the beginning, and it's been fascinating (...Captain.). However, I have
to toss in my two sense on this aspect...
I thought that Psionics were being developed for SR as a new and
different part of the game. You have technology, based on the physical
"plane," and you have magic, based on the astral "plane." Shouldn't
psionic energy be based on yet another dimension? I can't come up with a
good name, but it seems to me that we shouldn't limit ourselves to two
planes of existance. Sure, along with the astral and the physical, there
will be some mingling twixt the dimensions, but I think it would work
best if psionic energy was drawn from a different (new) one.
My thinking is, with the sudden odd appearance of Psis and the
Psi Adepts, the "Psionic" plane would be a much more mysterious and
uncharted realm of energy. Perhaps it's much more turbulant than the
astral, and travel in it is a harder feat to even attempt.
A few other thoughts...
I side with those who disagree with the penalties forced on those
who wish to play Psis. Unless simply being a Psi already puts you a step
ahead of mages, the "penalty" for each should be equal. If you want Psis
to be incredibly rare (and that's how I'd play it), make it so in the
game and the setting. If half of the players in your group suddenly
start playing Psis or Psi-depts, so what? It's a small world, and people
find each other. Just make the odds of the group ever meeting another
Psi horrible to think about. Eventually, the group will suffer from the
imbalance.
Mr. Skirvin, bravo on the priority tables. And, JD, if I haven't
told you in person, the history's nice. But no astral! Bad! * THWAP
