As for the questions raised over psionics and the astral plane, I have
a new proposal, one that I hope will make everyone happy. This
idea comes from a combination of ideas in the Grimoire's and
Werewolf(tm)'s description of the Umbra. Basically, psionics
access a "different level" of astral space than mages. Accessing the
power of this plane is similar to "normal" magicians (i.e. psi's take
drain the same way), but tapping into this "level of reality" requires
a different physical and psychological makeup than other magic
(making the use of psionics and magic mutually exclusive). The
perceptions of reality are different on the psionic's astral. Emotions
are not readily apparent, but physical objects are. A page of text
would be readable, but the viewer would have no idea of the
author's mood. Aura perception is something I'm still trying to
hammer out conceptually (any ideas?). One important difference is
the lack of the communication and perception to the natural world
that allows magicians to summon spirits and elementals. The
metaplanes can be reached by psionics, but they're different
metaplanes. One of these metaplanes is Time, which Psionics can
undergo an astral quest on to read the past/future for themselves, a
particular place, or a particular person. Visions of the future are
far less certain than visions of the past.
Lastly, spell defence vs. psionics and psionic defense against spells
are allowed, but at some penalty due to fighting against energies
originating from a different plane than the defender is used to (any
ideas for this? I'm thinking along the lines of half the allocated dice
being usable). Which leaves only the effectiveness of astral barriers
to be worked out?
