Sorry, Carter, but I must redirect your attention to the rule book (and, like
you, this isn't a flame. I had been planning on responding this, and just
recently got the time & read the rules) for Physads and Magic. According to
the rules, Physads do NOT get a magic pool. It says that specifically.
Unfortunately, I don't recall whether it's referring to ALL adepts, or just
Physads. However, since they don't have a magic pool, they can't get either
Spell Defense or Shielding. I would LIKE for them to be able to do that,
but alas, they cannot.
Cool Rev,
I went backward and forward over the book and couldn't find it. Not to say
it wasn't there, but I couldn't locate it.
Now it wouldn't be refering to all adepts. It was probable a reference to
physical adepts as conjure adpets can't use sorcery and thereby cannot have
a magic pool, and sorcerer/shamanic/elemental adepts would be pretty damn
useless if they didn't.
As for getting shielding on your physical adept, try to convince your GM to
at least let you use the initiate spell defense pool to defend yourself. This
will just give the initiate physical adept a slight edge in resisting magic.

P.S. Isn't the rulebook a great problem solver if you just read the right part
slow enough to understand what it sayes :)
