Subject: [Q] [ED/SR} Earthswallower?
Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 14:05:54 -0700 (PDT)
Okay. As part of a long-running plotline, my gaming group is currently
running around Germany, on retainer to both a Great Dragon and the
Trollkonigreich Shwartzwald secret service (such as it is). Note that of
the 4 players, none know that the dragon is indeed a dragon, and only one
suspects the secret service part. :)

But anyway, as part of this sequence, I had originally planned for the
group to (at the behest of the Dragon) trek through the toxic-flooded
areas in
the Northwest of Germany (possibly to one of the two inoperative reactors),
descend into a set of tunnels beneath the reactor, and there Find
Something Eldritch (tm). (Since I usually plan about 4 adventures ahead,
this left me with plenty of time.)

Then I ran into some information about an ED Dragon Earthswallower (Thank
you, Max Rible!) and went "OOooooooo."

So, at the moment, the current idea is that Earthswallower has
artificially kept the 'volume of mana' in her dwelling high enough that
while she herself went to sleep, her 'twisted servants' (or at least some
of them) stayed alive and tended her body.

So what I am looking for is for some people familiar with Earthdawn
(because I'm not, more's the pity) to give me ideas of what could be
encountered down there? What sort of 'twisted Name-Giver races' might my
players encounter? What sort of funky magics? What sort of animals?
etcetera, etcetera.

(Note: I'm not looking for stats, SR or ED. What I am looking for are
visual images, ideas, etc: I'll do the fleshing-out.)

Thanks!

Uhm ... Earthswallower? Never heard of him/her/it ... Heard of
Earthroot; perhaps you can give a reference to Earthswallower or explain
a bit?

Im not sure exactly what he is talking about either...

But if you go to the main fasa site (www.fasa.com) and follow the
links, i think the last ED Companion "Dragons" is still there for free
in pdf format. Pack your lunch, its a big read. It will help you
with ideas and stuff probably.

Dragons does not mention anything about an "Earthswallower". I did a
search through the file for "swallow". It took a while but it came up
with no matches other than references to eating blood wood elves and
other dietary delacies. :)

The only dragon with Earth in his name that I know of is Earthroot, and he
does have a society of T'skrang that serve him.

Earthswallower is mentioned in the Theran Empire sourcebook, in the
Vasgothia section. She has a huge underground labyrinth out there.
Anyone have a copy of _The Theran Empire_ handy? Check around
p157...

I know Earthswallower lives in Vasgothia, in the Earthdawn times, although
I'm not clear entirely on where that is. (S)he is not mentioned in
Dragons, which focuses on Barsaivan Dragons. As for minions, I'm not sure,
but I believe that few, if any, of the natives of the jungles served
her, since, in a recent game, we were asked by some Leafers to stop her
from altering the Jungle's Pattern.

I'm just a player in Earthdawn, deliberately not reading _all_ of the books, so
I'm not 100% on what's "canon" and what's just from our game...but since the
responses have been a bit lacking, I'll offer my 2 cents.
Earthswallower is a female great western dragon in Vasgothia (Germany area) who
is for some unknown reasons creating underground tunnel-patterns in the area
that she controls (obviously to try to change the Pattern of the area, but to
what ends...). She keeps a very low profile and has several namegiver lackeys,
but we haven't run across 'twisted servants' yet, just things like half-horrors
(no longer dual natured - only physical) and leafers unique to the area, and
then plently of the common namegiver races (Theran and the "savages" opposing
them). We've only just started playing in Vasgothia, so if you're interested in
what I find out later, we can keep tabs (off the list)

The Theran sourcebook does not provide much info on her or her activities
... She is creating some design by borrowing underneath Vasgothia and
served by Ulk-men (half-horror half-(meta)humans with some of the
abilities of both.). The purpose of this (magical?) pattern is unknown.
