major tragedy, which while it is for the people directly involved it still pales
besides tragedies such as the one in India. There must be something in the
air as the south of England suffered alot of rain recently so everyone in the
north got bored silly with endless news report after news report of some little
village that no one has ever heard of being cut off by a river bursting it's
banks.
As to global happenings ? Who knows, maybe it's the early signs of the
awakening ? :-)
Oh, someone mentioned a fith metaplane so I thought I'd let you know about mine.
In my shadowrun game there are 5 major elements, fire, earth, water, air and
spirit. Yes I've stolen the idea horrendously from sci-fi fantasy books but
what the hell, if it makes for a good story then what do I or my players care.
Briefly, the spirit metaplane is what I call one of the upper metaplanes (I'll
explain this more in another post, another time). There are no summonable
spirits from the metaplane as this metaplane is a source of energy that infuses
the spirit itself (obviously this all depends on your religious standpoint).
The only use I've found for it so far is as a way of bypassing wards without
attacking them. To do this the magician has to go on a quest equal to the
rating of the ward that he wishes to by pass. The advantage of doing it this
way is that the casting magcian of the ward does not receive warning of an
intruder.
A little more on the upper metaplanes. All the u-metaplanes can be reached by
any full magician as long as they have been taught how to do it. This isn't
something that can be read in a book or from a trid. The PC (if the GM wishes
to use the idea) must find a teacher to exlpain to them carefully the techniques
and to show them. Because of the inherent power of the upper metaplanes
teachers are extremly few and far between and if they have this much power they
vertainly don't need to make a living selling their secrets.
As to the other u-metaplanes well I'm still thinking it through but I like the
idea of having metaplanes where the actual totem spirit can be found (ie you
could go and actually fight Dog <not that you'd win>). There's a big potential
for others but there is also a big potential to let the idea get out of hand
so GM's would have to think very carefully about what they are thinking about
introducing.
Phill.
