OK, here's a question for you...

What effect does light have on the Target Numbers for spellcasting?

The reason I ask is that according to spellcasting procedure, the mage
becomes astrally attuned to his target, and can see his target's aura.
Now, if the mage casts a spell in complete darkness (or minimal light),
can he just switch to astral perception, see his target, and then cast
(with no lighting penalties)?

On the physical plane, it has normal effect. This gives metas an edge, and
human mages a reason to get minimal cyber, or quicken a hypersense (thermo
vision) spell. Percieving is risky, but should lowwer the target. I do think
that light has an astral presence and helps make auras more visible- there is
a discription in the grimoire of what conditions affect astral perception.
Quick and very dirty, I would say light is half as important (half modifier,
to a maximum of +2), but remember smoke,
rain, dust would all have normal effect on the astral.

When the mage uses his physical eyes to see, all aplicable lighting
and distance modifiers apply. When the mage uses astral perception
however he has no problem seeing no matter where he is. This ofcourse
open him up to a totally different set of problems and dangers. A percieving
magician can get grounded through, astrally attacked, one could even
argue that the background count of the place could be applied as a
lighting modifier.

well at least under all reasonable conditions, agreed, alone in a
dark heavily manmade location he might find he only has the light
from his/her own aura to see by which is tricky but living targets at
lead=st are clear as day.

no need to argue, that modifier gets added to ALL astral tests, yes
that includes perception, any spell casting and detection spell
target numbers, hey target number 16 for detect astral enemies at
background count 5!!!
Can we say ouch!

Seriously suggest you take a sam along !
