Subject: Question about totem modifiers
Date: Tue, 8 Nov 1994 16:30:00 CDT
The recent discussion about elementals, spirits, summoning tests, etc has
reminded me of a question I have about totem modifiers to spirit summoning.

If a totem grants a modifier to summoning spirits (for example, a cat shaman
gets +2 dice for conjuring city spirits), which tests can those dice be used
for? Is it:

The shaman gets two extra dice for the actual summoning of the spirit, but
_not_ for the drain resistance test

The shaman gets two extra dice for both the summoning test and the drain
resistance test

The shaman gets two dice to divide among the two tests as they see fit (
2 and 0, 1 and 1, or 0 and 2)

Any ideas would be appreciated, but please include page reference numbers if
possible.

It was always my impression that the shamn got to apply the dice to ALL
of the tests (drain, summoning, etc). The only thing it wouldn't help
with would be force vs charisma. If the force is still above charisma,
then the mage takes physical damage. Even if the force of the elemental
is only 2 above the charisma of the mage.

I say this one, because, even though it does not specifically say so
(actually, it doesn't specifically say anything), it is almost exactly the
same as what the totem modifiers for spells give. With the spell totem
modifiers, the modifier becomes an instant "Magic Pool", and a Magic Pool
can be applied either to the success test or the drain test. This last choice
is the closest to being equivalent to that that we can get.
