I don't want to seem ignorant, but if I'm going to stay on the list I
need to know. What do "AFAIK" and "wet carp" mean? Thanks in
advance.

Well, a wet carp is what you hit someone with when they come out with a
*really* bad or corny joke.
Usually accompanied by the >* THWAP *< sound effect.

See Monty Python's Flying Circus for a really good >* THWAPPING *<

As for AFAIK.....
Pass. I've not worked that one out myself yet....

Well, Andrew answered the wet carp question.

AFAIK is an acronym for As Far As I Know.

No. It's the sound of a large, wet, piscine(sp) lifeform impacting on
someones face.

(I.E. carp)

There was a sketch called the fish dance where two people are standing on a
canal towpath. Music begins to play. One of the people starts dancing
around, slapping the other in the face with little fish. The music stops.
The other bloke pulls out an enormous carp and knocks the first bloke into
the canal with it.

You think the acronyms are fun, just wait until Gurth and the other

Well, the acronyms ARE the worst in the "Naval Vessels" thread that's
been going on. You'd think that having to use all those acronyms at
work would dissuade them from using them in role-playing discussions.

Definitely. I can Quote the "De Vermiis Mysteriis" and sing the
"Missa da Requiem per Shuggai" (mixed with the "Carmina Burina" -
Laughs, you are not going to get it, only Paolo will) blindfolded
and with my tentacles bound (oops!).
BTW my favorite acronym is APFSDSDU (Armor Piercing Fin
Stabilized Discarding Sabot Depleted Uranium), the ultimate
ammo type :) And yes, If you really HATE acronyms, don't play
Car Wars -grin-
Ah, and you forgot ROTFL (Rolls On The Floor Laughing) and LOL
(Laughs Out Loud), though I think they are more IRC-ish in
genre.

"They" did. BTW, another useful acronym is RTDF, which means
"Read The Damn FAQ." *grin* You can find 'em from my home page for now,
though Fro will be taking 'em over shortly.

But then again, they're military types. They (especially those in military contracting)
assign acronyms and imediately assume that everyone has the secret decoder book.

Not really, if you use them every day for work you'll also use them when
talking to people who have no idea what they all mean. And, of course, the
military is generally one of the best (or worst?) examples of acronyms you
can think of -- I think they start with "Well, let's call this a 'THINGY'
and see what we can make it stand for, shall we?" Mind you, the naval ones
are the worst... STANAVFORCHAN and all that.

Try listening to an Austrian some day :) Yes, it's German, but only after
they've finished talking does it get through what they said, at least to
me and my high school German it does :)
