I just switched from SR2 to SR3 and noticed that some of the sample
characters have multiple datajacks. Other than a note in the datajack
description that says that the practice is not uncommon, I find no real
reason for this to be done. Can someone tell me what I'm missing??

SR3 now distinguishes between datajacks used for rigging and those used
for decking and other standard decking. Rigger datajacks are installed
behind the ear at the bottom where the jaw line ends and the neck
begins. Computer datajacks are installed in the temple. Datajacks can
also be used with Knowsoft and Linguasofts with the right additional
cyberware (Knowsoft Link, Linguisoft Link), so that could also be a
reason. Then, finally it could be that FASA just slipped up. Of course
that could never happen.

There is multi-tasking(using multiple datajacks) and a few other things.
Check out NERPS Lore I beleive for Multitasking.

You're not missing anything, it's more of a rules thing not catching up to
a role-playing flavor thing. Really good deckers in the novels have had
multiple datajacks for a while. I'm hoping that the Matrix book with it's
Advanced Decker rules will contain information on using multiple datajacks.

Sure, with a knowsoft link a datajack can function as a chipjack. Not useful you say? Ok,
add in a
skillsoft jukebox. If you have a chipjack you can switch between skillsofts with voice or
keypad
commands. If you have a datajack the switch can be done via mental commands. Sure, the
essence and nuyen cost of a datajack + knowsoft link is higher, but so is the utility of
the
combination. Finally, with the combination when neither datajack is not being used for a
matrix
connection both can hold skillsofts. Very useful when say, using your street etiquette 6
knowsoft
and your Japanese language soft....

I created a character recently that found the need for no less than three
datajacks, one for his deck, one for operating the rigger deck or controls
on his vehicle, and one for the input from his skillsoft jutebox (what a
great toy that is!).

"Windows 95: 32-bit extensions and a graphical shell for a 16-bit patch to
an 8-bit operating system originally coded for a 4-bit microprocessor,
written by a 2-bit company that can't stand for 1 bit of competition." -

In a lot of cases, there is hardly any point in getting more than one
datajack. There are only two cases where more than one is useful, it seems
to me:
1) when you want to jack into multiple things at once -- a remote control
deck and a rigger-modified vehicle, for example, or a cyberdeck and a
computer; or
2) When you want to be a rigger/decker combo (see Rigger 2, where it
explains how rigger jacks differ from decker jacks).

Most of the time, though, you should be able to do just about anything you
want with only a single datajack. I used to have a rigger character with
two datajacks, but after I while I swapped one for a softlink, simply
because I never used both.

AS has been mentioned, for multiple things that require datajacks.
for instance; I got a PC, he has 3
one is linked to a display link/knowsoft link for either languages or even
maps
one is for driving his vehicle
one is linked to his subdermal microphone linking to the microtransciever.

A scenario that occured in my game was a Rigger that wanted to be directly
jacked into his vehicle and a remote control deck too. An alternate solution
was to rig the vehicle via remote even though he was sitting in it.
