Sabots (pronounced "SAY-bow" or something) are the packing pieces around a
sub-caliber round, that fly off when the round leaves the barrel. For
example, the German 120 mm tank gun actually fires rounds that are 46 mm
in diameter, with the remaining 74 mm made up of lightweight material.
This gives the small-caliber round a higher velocity than can be achieved
with a full-caliber (120 mm) round, and thus a flatter trajectory and
higher armor penetration.
These rounds are known as APDS (Armor Piercing Discarding Sabot), or
APFSDS (Armor Piercing Fins Stabilized Discarding Sabot) if the actual
round has fins at the end, like an arrow.
