Subject: Questions for all...
Date: Fri, 7 Feb 1997 01:35:08 -0500
Here are some tricky questions:

1) Why isn't the Transform Spell resisted? Poof, you're a frog. I win.
Group Combat? Poof, you're a dolphin, my sammie can shoot you up.
2) Would someone notice you shooting them when you had disregard on?
3) I saw in KaGe a while back a ruling that Shapechange limited you to creatures
who had a body within 2 of yours. Was this official, or just KaGe screwing
up again?
4) Can anyone with the Sr Companion explain what difference that bit about
the Oni's Magical Priority makes?
5) Can you cause spirits you summoned to go Free? Just by
releasing them? This is implied in several places.
6) Can Insect spirits go Free?
7) Is the Queen a True Form (i.e., able to go astral)
or Flesh Form (trapped in physical)
8) What happens when you anchor spells of range Personal?
Do they work on other people?
9) Does the Personal Version of Bullet Barrier prevent you from
shooting your own gun?
10) Can you get a Spirit Focus for Insect or Toxic spirits for use
in banishing them? Can a shaman take control of a Toxic Spirit?

It is with Willpower...I usually use a tuna..That way it is only a
matter of time until those dry gills suffocate the target..Before the
size restrictions turn them into a sparrow and the fly away...Drop
the spell..resist one long drop...

> 2) Would someone notice you shooting them when you had disregard on?

Yes..and then they would disreguard...and then they would notice..and
then...

> 3) I saw in KaGe a while back a ruling that Shapechange limited you to creatures
> who had a body within 2 of yours. Was this official, or just KaGe screwing

Official..from Tom Dowd in the old days...

> 4) Can anyone with the Sr Companion explain what difference that bit about
> the Oni's Magical Priority makes?

Beyond my current capabilities..But in 7 - 10 days I should have the
means in my possesion....

> 5) Can you cause spirits you summoned to go Free? Just by
> releasing them? This is implied in several places.

I would say yes..If it were that spirit's inclination...

> 6) Can Insect spirits go Free?

Hmmmm...If they are controled by the shaman..But it usually is the
other way round..I would say all "BUG" spirits are free..

> 7) Is the Queen a True Form (i.e., able to go astral)
> or Flesh Form (trapped in physical)

True...

> 8) What happens when you anchor spells of range Personal?
> Do they work on other people?

Nope..they should -only- work on the person the personal was meant
for...But that is naturally up for argument...

> 9) Does the Personal Version of Bullet Barrier prevent you from
> shooting your own gun?

That all depends on your intention when you cast the spell...If it
was to stop all bullets in their tracks..guess what....But it is
usually the intention to stop all incoming bullets...
Here is a good question...What happens to the bullets??? Ricochette
or stopped dead and stuck..or stopped dead and drop to the floor????

> 10) Can you get a Spirit Focus for Insect or Toxic spirits for use
> in banishing them?

I would think a Toxic Spirit Focus would be something only a Toxic
shaman would be able to use...same thing for a "BUG" Spirit Focus...A
Focus or the casters alignment should work fine I would think...

Can a shaman take control of a Toxic Spirit?

Why not...I have always thought of this as sort of puppeteering a
spirit/elemental Although I would never allow any continued use of
the little nasty as this should cause arual contamination...Hmmma
temp magic rating reduction should be the result of use of this sort
of spirit..this loss should continue at approx 2 points per combat
round until 0 is reached at which point the spirit goes free..OOps..I
would give the same handycap to a toxic shaman...

It makes Transform and Shapechange easy to use on your enemies. Two ways
of solving this are to make it resisted, or require a voluntary target
(that last one doesn't make much sense with Transform, though).

> 2) Would someone notice you shooting them when you had disregard on?

I'd say this falls under the same heaving as alienation power -- they find
a rational reason why they're getting shot at, like assuming there's a
sniper somewhere, rather than looking for you.

> 3) I saw in KaGe a while back a ruling that Shapechange limited you to

I believe that was a Tom Dowd ruling, but I don't own KaGe, I just read it
in someone else's copy.

> 4) Can anyone with the Sr Companion explain what difference that bit

Didn't Mike correct this already? *grabs Companion* Oni characters may
select Resources as priority A, Metahuman as priority B, and C for Magic.

> 5) Can you cause spirits you summoned to go Free? Just by
> releasing them? This is implied in several places.

The way I interpret this, is that the spirit goes back to wherever it
comes from when you say it's "free" to go where it wants to.

> 6) Can Insect spirits go Free?

Queens try to if they get a chance. Others, I don't think so.

> 7) Is the Queen a True Form (i.e., able to go astral) or Flesh Form

_Always_ a true form.

> 8) What happens when you anchor spells of range Personal?
> Do they work on other people?

Personal spells only work on the caster, so I guess the same rule applies
after anchoring them.

> 9) Does the Personal Version of Bullet Barrier prevent you from

I don't think so.

> 10) Can you get a Spirit Focus for Insect or Toxic spirits for use

Probably only if you're aligned with them, but don't take my word for
it...

Does the transform spell require a willing subject????

I think so....

|6) Can Insect spirits go Free?

But... they're always under the command of the queen (in the case of hive
insects), and otherwise, they're practically free anyway.... They own the
shaman, not the other way 'round....

They're just pretending.

It was a Tom Dowd ruling, which is Unofficially "Official". How's that for
confusing?? Since it came from Tom Dowd, some people view it as Official.
Since it wasn't in an Official FASA Sourcebook or Rulebook, some people
think it's Unofficial.

Personally, I have a house rule that I use, because I came up with it
before I ever heard a ruling one way or another, or was even on this list
(Days that some remember fondly, to be sure...:)). My house rule works
like this...

Every +/-2 Body incrases the target number by +1. Thus, A Body 12 Troll
trying to turn into a Body 2 bird has a modifier of +5 to the TN.

I've toyed with using a +2 for every +/-2, but the situation hasn't come up
more than a couple times in our games, so I haven't been able to playtest
it very much...

However, this rule does make it more difficult to make those radical
changes, but still allows for greater variety in what you can change
into...:):)

I think he was making a distinction from the normal "Set free" and the "Let

Why should it? Unless you wanted to make the barrier work both ways for
some strange reason, then it wouldn't... i think it's how you set the
spell originally...

Ugh... Why would you want to?

I would say no, to all of the questions... Spirit foci for Bug or Toxics
would only work if you actually COULD summon one of these spirits, and
since these types of Shamans are restricted to NPC's, you couldn't do it.
And any Shaman of another totem (Not Bug or Toxic) would probably really
annoy his totem if he had one of these...

Of course, if for some strange reason your GM is letting you play one of
these types of Shamans, then by all means, you should be able to get one...

After all, you have a very short life expectancy as it is...:):):)

Probably a typo, make it Will [R] and that should fix it.

> 2) Would someone notice you shooting them when you had disregard on?
Nope, though they would likely notice they were being shot, just not
where it was coming from. I'd reduce their TN for noticing you though,
say -2, since any survivors would be suspicious.

> 3) I saw in KaGe a while back a ruling that Shapechange limited you to
> creatures who had a body within 2 of yours. Was this official, or just
> KaGe screwing up again?
I've never seen an official rule in print that says such. So as far as
the printed books go, I'd say no it's not official. I hear rumor the the
DLoH was the source of this, making it official. Take your pick, either
way I'd say it's not a bad idea for a rule.

> 4) Can anyone with the Sr Companion explain what difference that bit
> about the Oni's Magical Priority makes?
Makes no sense to me. Normally a metahuman uses priority A for race and
B for a full magicians. The SR Comp says, B for race and A for magic.
All they did was reverse the priorities. I assume it should have said
something like A for race and C for full magician, D for adepts.

> 5) Can you cause spirits you summoned to go Free? Just by releasing them?
> This is implied in several places.
Officially I know of no rule on it. I've always played it this way. If
you deliberately release a spirit hoping to create a free spirit (which
might be friendly towards you as a result), you roll against it's Force as
per the rules for Free Spirits (Grimoire, p76). If it stays it stays, if
it don't it don't.

> 6) Can Insect spirits go Free?
I had to do some reading on this, and from what I can tell, yes, they
can. From what I gather it is rare. Insects tend to be loyal so probably
don't try to go free. If the shaman were killed and there is no Queen,
they might go free. If there is a Queen, no. If there is a Queen and
both the shaman and Queen are killed, yes. Nothing official in that, just
my own speculation.

> 7) Is the Queen a True Form (i.e., able to go astral) or Flesh Form (trapped
> in physical)
On page 136 of Bug City "Queens and Mothers must be true forms." This
was changed from the Grimoire, Mantid females used to always manifest as
flesh forms. Not so anymore.

> 8) What happens when you anchor spells of range Personal? Do they work on
> other people?
I'd say they only affect the caster, as the personal spell is defined as
only affecting the caster (even though there are a few examples in the
Grimoire of it doing otherwise). In general I'd be careful of allowing
it.

> 9) Does the Personal Version of Bullet Barrier prevent you from shooting

I'd say yes.. since it's still a barrier. But basically it'd be GM's
call, check in advance.

> 10) Can you get a Spirit Focus for Insect or Toxic spirits for use in

I don't see why not, you can get one for everything else.

Sure, but better find out if it's of the bound or free variety first.

I distinguish between two basic types of Personal spells:

Personal I: The normal spell without teh area of affect, eg a bullet
barrier which acts like a second skin (thus not affecting shooting your
own gun), but it can still be cast on anyone.

Personal II: The normal spell with the restricted target of yourself. You
still have area of effect if appropriate but it is centred on you.

Question - for a Bullet Barrier could all your friends stand within the
Personal II version (still with area of effect) and get protection?

ANd then there is the hybrid of Personal I and II whihc is imaginatively
entitled Personal III.

If it's area effect centered on you yes they can but you can only
ever center the thing on you so they better get close, nice IPE

blasts :)

I generally rule that if it does things to someone they get to resist
(assuming its a spell) buy some means, be that a perception test
attribute roll or whatever.
eg improved invis can be negated by a good perception roll so thats
ok.
Manabolts get resisted by willpower.

If memory serves disregard works something like improved invis in
adding +2/sucess to pay attention to the person, i'd say firing off a
gun counted for 'action very obvious' on the perception roll to pay
attention to the firer.

I do allow folks to set spirits free but most of the time the spirit
will probably act just like its run out of services and get outa
there fast, trying this trick for roleplaying is good, just to get
friendly free spirits is the worst sort of Munchkinism as they are
very powerful.

They all count as controlled when summoned.
Queens may however try and break free as per the normal rules, plus
nealy any time they feel like it, this is discussed briefly in GR2.
Yes queen bugs can therefore get spirit energy, spend it to raise
their force, gain Karma off the insect shaman etc, now considering i
have managed a dice rolled rating 16 metaplanar quest, just
contemplate it, force 16 free, spirit energy 16 queen but, Ant just
to rub it in! thats force 32, going in 106+1D6 physical, 116 + 1D6 on
the astral, rolling 92+threat attack skill, can we say 'find me a
great dragon and NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'. Needless to say such thing
should be run away from.

Depends. If its a dome about you, well the bullet passes through it
so sure, a barriers a barrier, it never suggests they are one way!
However if you get rid of the area effect and make it skin tight you
are probably ok as the end of the gun barrel will not be in your
aura. (held as opposed to worn object)

its a spirit so sure!

taking control of a toxic spirit might affect you, and anyone
watching might assume the worst and fire first ask you why later.

I think house rules are the answer to most of these. Luckily I don't have
any initiate mages in my campaign yet so I don't have to worry. But I can
answer some of them with house rules of my own.

1) I think they may have left out the (R) after willpower, which would
mean it can be resisted.

2) A mage in my team has a Force 6 Disregard spell, and it usually works.
But anytime he makes a threatening gesture or even looks at a person funny,
they get another chance to resist. If he starts shooting at a person it is
an automatic success for everyone who sees or hears it.

5) Yes, as long as you have a service to tell them to be free. (Which you
always will otherwise they won't be there)

6) Sure, what the hell, More trouble for the PC's! : )

9) I would say no, as long as you didn't pay essence for the gun. (like an
internal gun in your cyberarm)

All the rest require deep thought (and much debate), which I am out of
because of all these tests i've been taking.

Again....you can select to have these spells one way? I didn't know

they were refering to beat cops having personal, so how was it cast on

I was hoping for some FASA answers, but House rules give me an idea of the
prevalent notions...

So I thought as well, but in didn't say it in the Errata...most annoying.

We;ve been pretty much treating it just like invisibility. No automatic
successes. THey know they've been shot, but they can't see the person.
They still take defensive actions (blind fire, diving behind stuff). The
real problem was things like "Can I sit down at dinner with them?"

Can you force them free, or do they just become uncontrolled?

>6) Sure, what the hell, More trouble for the PC's! : )
I would restrict it based on whether it was a Hive insect. But I'd agree.

>9) I would say no, as long as you didn't pay essence for the gun. (like an

This is a tricky one....I believe FASA said that your aura extends outward
from your body to a certain degree.....I wasn't sure if this covered your
gun. (I would say the aura extends to cover that which you identify as
yourself....thus armor is covered, but guns and tools aren't. You can be
placed in a body bag that is thinner than your armor, and it isn't covered,
because you identify it as seperate.)

Dunno.

umm...Maybe?

I think I heard someone say this was a ruling by Tom Dowd, but I don't
know.

It's incorrect as printed in the SR Companion. FASAMike explained that to
us in December, I think.

<shrug> I suppose that you could. Why would you want to (except in the
case of an ally)?

>6) Can Insect spirits go Free?

Yes. Queens can, anyway.

True Form.

hmmm....

Doubtful, but that's IMO. I really don't know, however.

>10) Can you get a Spirit Focus for Insect or Toxic spirits for use

I don't see why not...though a shaman maybe wouldn't want to take control
of the Toxic Spirit (I think he'd be far more interested in banishing
it). But, if you can make spirit foci for specific free spirits, I don't
see any reason why you couldn't make one for Toxics and Bugs. I'd expect
that the Toxic and Bug shamans probably have such items.

Of course. What I meant is that anyone failing the Perception test will
not notice you firing the gun at them.

I wrote the changes into my copy of the Companion when Mike posted them on
the list, and I typed those into my reply to this question...
