In my politics class, we studied civilizations, because they are the
largest groups humans can form before being called "humans". As an
example, I am: white, American, member of Western Civilization, human.
Interesting that the author put race first, and then nationality, neh?
Anyway, the point of the book, and this letter, is the way a civilization,
and any group, defines itself: by what it is not. So therefore, if you
have blue eyes, and all your friends have blue eyes, and everyone you know
has blue eyes, then someone with green eyes or brown eyes is DIFFERENT,
and thus you might think they aren't as good as people with blue eyes.
What is the point of all this? Well, I'm just trying to say that humans,
as with all animals, don't tolerate differences all that well. Maybe if
everyone realizes that, we could work to fix all the problems in this
crazy, crazy, mixed up world.
