Here is how I believe railguns work:

Magnetic field through barrel. Unidirectional and constant.
The "Bullet" has a current passing through it. This creates
a large force by the "right hand rule" and the "bullet" is
propelled very VERY fast. In electric motor terms this
is called a linear machine. This means though that the bullet
has to have some contact so that the current is always in
one direction. The bullet is in essence the armature of the
motor.

Now a coilgun is a little different. This same concept is
used on Mag Lev trains. The magnetic force is generated
below the rails. (Train rails in this case) This force
is used to control the train and propel it. Also it provides
the speed control. The actual levitation comes as the
result of being repelled from the track. The usual distance is
, don't quote me, around the 1-10 cm. mark. That is pretty awesome
when you consider the whole train is that far off the track (usually
one track in the center, or two tracks on the sides). Also the lev effect
is generated by the train. (and the rails) It is like a mutual repellation
or something. It has been a while since I had the seminar.

Anyway, the coilgun works on basically the same concept....

See, you really do learn something in those boring Grad. Seminars they
make you attend.
