I came to two conclusions. One: my research skills need to be pollished.
Two: Rail guns do infact cause friction on the rails and are not suspended
on a magnetic feild. One of the drawbacks that the designers talked
about was the fact that they did have to replace the rails regularly.
Coilguns, however, do support their rounds on a magnetic feild, do work
by having a tube like barrel surrounded by magnets, and a 1.5 meter
long barrel (or flyway as the articals call it) with 8 magnet "coils" can
launch a 5 kg armature at about Mach 1.
So I guess that it is just a case of calling a rose by a different
name. Or a coilgun in railguns clothing.
