Speaking of raising stats how do you guys out there do it ? Do you just go
"Well my mage just got enough karma from that last adventure to raise my
strength to 4 and presto next morning you wake up feeling stronger" or what ?

Suggestions wanted.

Okay... In order to raise an attribute, the character needs to:
1) If he raises a physical attribute:
1.1) Above max: Practice a lot within the field or his attribute like an
athlete would for say a year per point of the wanted attribute if you want to be
a bit reallistic and a month otherwise (in my game, that's around as many
adventures). In order to do so he would need to have an average lifestyle or
higher or spend another 1,000 nuyen a month.
If he lives in the redmond barrens or so, make his life hard (as it would
normally be...) and allow him to raise his attribute after a few scenarios...
1.2) Otherwise: If he raises his attribute by one point, allow him. If that's
the second or more time he raises his attribute, take the rule above.
2) If he raises a mental attribute:
2.1) Above max: Discover and practice a lot within his fields of experience.
I think he would need a mentor (or a teacher, they do the same thing... in
theory :)
It would take him the same time as for physical attributes.
2.2) Otherwise: Allow him... if the character has learn things since he is a
shadowrunner. If the only thing he does is to fight more and more, why would he
raise his charisma?
If he keeps an eye on everything, allow him to raise intelligence.
If he is a good leader or is very social, allow him to raise charisma.
If he suffered many things and managed to resist psychologically, allow him to
raise willpower.
Never forget what means a good attribute. If he has a willpower above 5, he can
resist to many pressures. Your player should not despair in front of the first
difficulty... He has to roleplay his attributes!!! :)

And well, I've another idea:
You can spend in an attribute half what you paid for a related skill.
For exemple, if you raise athletics from 3 to 4 (8 points), you can spend 4
points (8/2) for your quickness.
Yes, that seems very good indeed :)
Perhaps not, you'll have to keep a trace on how you spend your karma...

IMHO I'd say that the mage puts all his effort for a period of time between
runs into increasing stats/skills/spells whatever. This of course goes for
everyone else as well of course.

A good rule of thumb is 2 days per Karma spent (or more/less if you have a
timeline worked out or something.)

In game terms it's not really relevant unless somethings going on in the
background.

YES.... I LIKE YOUR IDEAS!!!!!
I'd be a bit more generous on the time scale, but otherwise..... YES

They can but it cost them time and they have to do it one point at a time.
Base time: target rating in weeks
Task: Current rating in dice against a target number equal to new rating.
Note: if characters fail it automatically cost them base time in weeks plus
they have reroll and try again if they want to attempt it again. Remeber
they still need to maintain their lifstyle. BTW I use the same system to
raise skills.

Well, like all stats, skills as well, I try to make sure it is brought
into roleplaying. For example my elf just raised his Str from 4 to 5, now
I didn't want to let this detract from the scenario but I said taht my
character had been going to teh gym, and practising with his throwing
knives, at teh current point in time he'd strained his shoulder joint,
and thus I had a quirk to play with. When I want to get his Aikido up
I'll make a point of finding an instructor and paying nuyen for it.

well it is an ongoing thing... think of it this way... the mage has been
actually increasing his body (or whatever) little by little over the course
of his whole life (or mission) and has been recieveing karma as well... the
karma he spends at the end is the mission is symbolic to all of the little
increases over his life time... the spending is just a way to measure the
small increases.

karma is not tangable it is the "life force" or "experience" a person
gets
through out one's life... this experience can then be used to represent
increasment in one physical (or mental) abilities

of course if you want to role-play it you could require the mage or whatever
to spend a week at the gym (or library or whatever) to increase his
attributes...

but usually someone gets enough action trying to survive from day to day...
