>>>>>>[ Yah well all ye are is a bunch of wet-nosed milksop landlubbers.
A
deck is not the mark of a decker, ye scurvy dawgs. Ye can't traipse down te
the local Stuffin' Shack and scarf up one o them ready-made Fuchi-6's andf
call yerself a Decker! A real decker tis marked by two things, aye, his
knowledge and experience. Aye, a Fairlight Excalibur is fine thing, but tis
no match for even a turtle in the hands of a real decker, me hearties. Now,
take that one to heart. ]<<<<<<

>>>>>>[ Ah. My friend, the pirate, is rather dogmatic in his opinions
as he
is colorful in their expression, but he does have a point. There is a
disturbing tendency in shadowrun to equate the amount of cash one is capable
of spending on ones deck with the ability one has. In truth, a good deck can
often be nothing but a crutch. Programming ability is another true mark of a
decker. Any decker who buys his wares on the street is indeed a stupid
fellow who doesn't realize that a) most of the good programs are done by
corps with built in back-doors and errors and b) the rest are done by deckers
slumming who often like to inject little trojans and virii (mini-IC) into
that "wiz" shield-7 you just bought. A decker who uses software he hasn't
wrote himself is just asking for trouble.

Finally, I would like to clarify what my friend means by "experience" because
in my opinion this is the single most effective tool of a decker. By this we
are talking experience in identifying IC by their iconage, know how long it's
safe to stay in a system, know where the best Shadowlands are, that sort of
thing. Finally, a truly experienced Decker will have a strong network of
connections both in the Shadows and most importantly, in the Corps and
Military. Indeed the best runs succeed not because of a hot deck with wiz
warez, but because the Decker convinced someone to let him in! In the old
days this skill was known as Social Engineering. ]<<<<<<
