that offsets penalties that gets easier when the magician gets more
powerful. This is a powerful ability. Make it even easier to do or
cheaper to have an watch how much it shifts the balance of the game. So
what if it's not that useful at low power/skill levels, what is? Highly
skilled and up is when it really starts to shift the playing field and it
is kept in check by the current mechanics. If you don't think it's worth
the investment your character makes in it then don't take it. Obviously
you already see the current benefits in it or you wouldn't be going on
about it.
If you really want to see it run differently try a totally new
approach say using your centering skill versus the target number (Base
plus mods WITHOUT GRADE REDUCTION) reduces the target number with each
success up to your grade level but not below base target number. I don't
like the way that works but you might. Try it and see how that changes
the effect of magic in your games.

Ancient cultures believed that names held great power, personal names
more so and they were guarded very closely. To protect themselves, they
answered to another name, because if another discovered their real name,
it could be used against them.
History repeats itself.
