We must have read things differently, then. I remember thinking, back in
1990 when I first got SR1, "There's no way to turn these things off...."
Made things a little interesting...the character they talk about in
CYBERTECHNOLOGY, that Findler-Man had to dose with MAO to get him to calm
down? That was one of my characters. My gaming group always had a
tranquilizer gun handy; Toaster was always twitchy to start with, and when
he got his wires....

I still allow existing characters to retrofit. Since I was charging to
start with, it wasn't much of a freebie for those who already had it (though
I did give them the .1 Essence difference back; my gizmo cost .3 to the .2
in CT).

It's not my favorite thing, either.

We just got fed up with wasting surprise attacks on sammies who
always had high reactions. We added it as a houserule.

Retrofitting would kill a few charcters and devastate a few burned
out magicians I like to play. That's why we made it a true freebie for
existing characters.

Ancient cultures believed that names held great power, personal names
more so and they were guarded very closely. To protect themselves, they
answered to another name, because if another discovered their real name,
it could be used against them.
History repeats itself.
