I think it much more likely would claim that this is proof that Heaven
and Hell (and Purgatory) really exist; that you can't call spirits back
from them; that the Essence hours is simply the soul's last hours of
access to the physical, astral, and meta planes of existence - the
ordinary world.

And then they are sent to the place that they cannot move from, without
god's direct intervention.

I have no argument with the rest of Ivy's post.

As a side note, in our campaign, many christian sects _do_ believe that
these are the days of Armageddon, leading up to the second coming...

Hmm... is the Christian Purity League and George Wells a FASA component
or a local add-on? I'd guess the latter, since their racist meta-human
stance (significant, since George Wells got elected Mayor of Seattle, in
our game), would probably upset a lot of people if it was published
source material...

Some deletion.

I am curious, with the way the whole thing was put in the SRII rulebook,
how did you come up with this "place"?

I tried to scrabble for a justification that would fit their belief
system. Since that's what I would expect they would do. As far as
I know, the dogma is that you can't ever speak to the spirits of the
dead, because souls never leave Heaven or Hell. That such spirits
are merely demons pretending to be the dead, to ensnare the souls
of those who dabble. So the statement that the spirit is gone `Essence'
hours after death, would fit into their belief system with _no_
problem. In fact, it would be counted as a piece of supporting
evidence.

I think you've written off organised religion too easily in your campaign.
