OK, here we go chummer's, the first installment of th slang guide.
Before anyone get's wound up, this one isn't mine, someone else
did it and posted it to Rec.Cyber, and I kept it, unfortunately
cutting of any identifying marks in the process, so if you want
to own up..... :-)

Greetings, Edgerunners (SR and CP alike). Pelzig here with a data dump that is
apart from my normal postings. In running thru my files on my word processor, I
ran across a listing I had made a while back concerning "SnowCrash", a
cyberpunk novel by Neal Stephenson. The listing was of the lingo Neal used in
the novel as well as some of the names for gear, weapons, drugs, and other
items which appeared in "Snow Crash". Upon entering all the fun on the Web and
Internet, Neal's name and his book appear quite often. A month or so back he
was a guest in an AOL chat, there is a newsgroup on AOL on his book (the last
time I looked that is), and I'm sure there are others things dealing with this
popular novel. I myself enjoyed it greatly, especially in his writing style and
the use of the lingo (Bad Voltage [the author escapes me] is another great book
if you want "cityspeak".). So to add some flavor to my CP campaigns, I went
thru the novel and jotted down some of the words which make "Snow Crash" so
unique and such a good read. So here is what I came up with (and its also a
wonderful excuse to transfer data from my word processor to my computer). And
now, the lingo of Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash".
Apple pie - a drug.
Arachnofiber weave - low density yet tough Kevlar-like body armor;"...bullet
will bounce off its arachnofiber weave like a wren hitting
apatio door...."; the fiber allows good body ventilation;
"...excess perspiration wafts through it like a breeze
through a freshly napalmed forest."
Armorgel - thick, fluidy substance for protection of the joints and
limbs."...feels like gritty jello, protects like a stack
of telephone books."
Avatar - Metaverse term for a personal ICON.
Avatar Construction Set - off-the-shelf custom avatar designing kit.
Bimbo box - slang term for a minivan. "He cuts off a bimbo box -a
family minivan-...."
BIOS (Built-In Operating System) - This system is an option much akin to the
RadiKS smartwheels. A sensor suite monitors the road
conditions then instructs the BIOS on what it finds. The
BIOS in turn controls the wheelspokes to provide maximum
control.
Bithead - slang term for a hacker or "nerdy" computer enthusiast.
Bitmap - a piece of software spelled out in binary.
Blood bags - term for transfusion blood sacks.
Blowing code - hacker term for inputing information.
Brandy - highly popular, off-the-shelf female avatar. "The user can
select three breast sizes; perky and interested,
improbable, and ludicrous...limited repertoire of facial
expressions: cute and pouty; cuteand sultry; perky and
interested; smiling and receptive; cute and spacy...eye
lashes are half an inch long,...the software so cheap that
they are rendered as solid ebony chips. When a Brandy
flutters her eyelashes, you can almost feel the breeze."
Bug - street dealer lingo for a microchip.
Bundy Stunner - a stun stick.
Burbclave - suburb described as "...computer-designed Burbclave street
patterns and secreted themselves [talking about people] in
symmetrical sheetrock shitholes with viynl floors and ill-
fitting woodwork and nosidewalks, vast house farms out in
the loglo wilderness, a culture mediumfor a medium
culture."
Chill - street term for Freon, a comodity now, available only to
the rich who still have air-conditioners.
Citybuster - A MIRV from a nuclear missile.
Clint - male version of the Brandy who is "...craggy and handsome
and has an extremely limited range of facial expressions."
Crete - short term for concrete, not the island of Crete. I.e., he
wipedout all over the crete.
Cuff - a high-fashion, high-voltage metallic cuff around the wrist which causes
a massive shock to the attacker who grabs the wearer's
wrist.
Daemon - "...an old piece of jargon from the UNIX operating system,
where it referred to a piece of low-level utility
software, a fundamental part of the operating system."
Deadbeaters International - a "...high-impact collection agency."
Dentata - a very small hypodermic needle device inserted into the
vagina; upon a penis entering, the needle will pierce the
tip and inject powerful narcotics and depressants into the
bloodstream rendering the male unconscious for at least
four hours.
Doc boxes - term for a medic's instrument kits.
Dry operation - sitting around, soaking up information gathered by others,
then making out a report without ever leaving the desk.
Ed Meeses - a trillion dollar bill.
Electropigment coverall - a coverall option which allows the user to change the
color of the coverall. The control is a hard disk sewn into
the fabricof the collar and when a click is heard by pressing
the disk, the coverallwill change.
Forking - a term used when, say, a conversation takes a turn or fork; also,a
convention can get all forked up.
Four-points - being tied up by the wrists and ankles; i.e. she was bound
four-points.
Fuzzy Buzzy - a drug.
Fuzz-grunger - a term for someone into hard music.
Gag - brothel lingo whether or not a woman can supress her gag reflex;
i.e.when giving a "blowjob", will she gag or not.
Gargoyle - someone whose job it is to gather intelligence in the field.
They are usually bedecked with all manner of surveillance gear.
Glass knife - very fine glass knife with a one molecule wide edge; supersharp
and undetectable by metal detectors.
Glom - to group or gather; i.e. to glom at a concert or they glommed at themall
yesterday.
Gogglehead - a slang term for a hacker.
Goggle in - term for "jacking" into the Metaverse.
Guage - brothel lingo for how "tight" a woman is; a 12 guage would be
"stretched" but a .410 would be nearly a virgin.
Harpoon - device used by RadiKS Kouriers for transportation. The harpoon
isa "...big round padded electromagnet on the end of an
arachnofiber cable."The cord "...which is attached to a handle
with a power reel in it...."
Het - slang term for a heterosexual.
Hiro's computer - smooth exterior surface with a fisheye lens of polished glass
and an optical coating. Inside the computer, three lasers create
beams of color, shooting them out in all directions. Electronic
mirrors within the comuter can shoot the beams onto goggles to
display the Metaverse imagery.
Hiro's goggles - goggles wrap halfway around the head, the bows of the goggles
have earphones to plug into the outer ear. The earphones have
built-in noise cancellation features. Goggles display images of
the Metaverse to the hacker.
Hop - a heavy, flowing vine, used for "pot" making.
Hydrological warfare - a style of warfare conducted by causing some form of
natural disaster to occur upon the enemy. Very messy but fairly
clean in NBC terms.
Hypercard - A Metaverse device for transferring data; looks like a business
card. Also, it can refer to a hacker's personal store of data,
collected in the form of many hypercards.
Hyponarx - needles which are cheap and dull. Used for the injection of
drugs.
Intel - slang term for information, knowing something worth something.
Kicker - seagoing lingo for an outboard motor.
Liquid Knuckles - super powerful chemical akin to Mace.
Loglo - term used to describe the neon glow caused by thousands of signs.
Loogie gun - slang term for a Short-Range Chemical Restraint Projector.
MagicHooverPoon - surfer term for pooing onto an eighteen wheeler where the
suction of the truck creates a vacuum behind it that a surfer
can ride without even keeping pooned to the truck. Dangerous
trick for the unwary.
MagnaPoon - brand name for the harpoon. Some have superconducting poons so as
to stick to non-ferrous objects.
Medicine - a term used by hackers for a anti-viral program.
Metaverse - Snow Crash's term for the Net or Matrix.
Michelin Man Mode - the RadiKS coverall can, when activated, inflate airbags
around the pelvis and spinal column and inflate a cervical
collar to protect the neck and entire head. Armorgel defends the
joint. This modeis used to protect the wearer from heavy falls
and impacts.
Mosquitos - an ergonomic plunger for the injection of drugs. Doesn't hurt as
much as normal needles. Comes in color schemes.
Mustard - a drug.
Narthex - a drug.
Nine - slang term for a nine-millimeter weapon.
Old Beaters - really old cars.
Orbiting - term used by surfers who make long, wide circles to burn off
speed.
Perp - short term for a perpetrator.
Personal Modular Equipment Harness - "tactical" harness festooned with all
manner of gear for the person. Cumbersome to wear. Described as
"...the chandelier o' gear...."
Plank - surfer term for a skateboard.
Pod - short for partner, like a pod in crime.
Pooned - term for being harpooned by a RadiKS Kourier.
Poonmissile - lingo for a Harpoon anti-ship missile.
PROM (Programmable Read-Only Memory) - These chips come empty but are inputed
with information by the user. This information becomes frozen,
unable to be erased.
Taxilinga - language used exclusivly by cab drivers. Very, very hard to
understand. "They said it was based on English but not one word
in a hundred was recognizable...Taxilinga is melliflous babble
with a few harsh foreign sounds, like butter spiced with broken
glass."
RadiKS Knight Visions - multi-optic/sensory goggles used by Kouriers.Offers a
wide range of optic such as IR, UV, light dampeners,thermograph,
and more.
RadiKS Mark II Smartwheels - used by the truly rad skateboarders, these wheels
"...consists of a hub with many stout spokes. Each spoke
telescopesin five sections. On the end is a squat foot, rubber
tread on the bottom,swiveling on a ball joint." These wheels
adapt to road conditions such aspotholes, bumps. etc. by
adjusting the length and location of the spokesthereby absorbing
almost all the shock.
RadiKS Narrow Cone Tuned Shock Wave Projector - this device is a one-shotdeal
mounted in the front of a plank; mainly used to shatter,
reallyshatter, glass to allow the surfer to ride through without
having tophysically go through the glass.
Ramp turd - slang term for a surfer on the curb, waiting for a ride to poon.
Rat Thing - a cyborg dog described as being "...Rottweiler-sized, segmented
into overlapping hard plates like those of a rhinoceros. The legs
are long, curled way up to deliver power, like a cheetah's...the
tail...[is]incredibly long and flexible...because it just consists
of segments,hundreds of them neatly plugged together, like vertebrae."
Reason - nickname of a Gatling-type 3mm hypervelocity railgun system. Has about
24 barrels.
Retard - a deragatory term for slow drivers.
Roid - slang term for a steroid.
Short- Range Chemical Restraint Projector - weapon which fires a blob of
fibers which harden very quickly. Used in the apprehension of
suspects.
Snow Crash - hacker lingo for a "...system crash - a bug - at such a
fundamental level that it frags the part of the computer that
controls the electron beam in the monitor, making it spray wildly
across the screen, turning the perfect gridwork pixels into a
gyrating blizzard."
Sphygmomanometer - polygraph test that measures blood pressure.
Spook gear - mainly found in Kourier coveralls, spook gear consists of all the
defensive items wthin the suit. The spook gear can be voice
activated with code phrases.
STD (Severe Tire Damage device) - used to prevent intruders from driving into
something, not out.
Stuka - slang term for diving i.e. she did a stuka into the pool or hestukad
underneath the table.
Stun Bunny - a rocket launcher fired, airbursting shock wave projector, used to
stop plenty of people "non-harmfully".
'Sup - short for "Whats up?
"Surfer - term for a skateboarder.
Thrasher - another term for someone who delves into hard, slamming music.
TurfNet - computer service which allows someone to look for "oppurtunityzones"
to further business.
Ultra Laminars - an ergonomic plunger for the injection of drugs. Doesn't hurt
as much as normal needles. Comes in color schemes.
Unpoon - to release the magnet from the target.
Vertigo - a drug.
Wilson - surfer term for wiping out i.e. he did a wilson into a tree.
Zode - seagoing lingo for a boat.
