I think I must have one of the more racially-diverse pc groups I've heard of.
I have an anglo-american dwarf (red hair, green eyes), a black elf, a Japanese
human, an anglo elf (looks like Bowie/Sting), and an asian ork (well, we think
he's asian). My npc's are about as varied. This crew could easily encounter
racism, both the meta-human and ethnic group-based varieties. They haven't
encountered it very much (not yet, anyway). Part of the reason may be that we
live in north-central Minnesota; most of us grew up in places where there is
little (if any) racial discrimination, due to a lack of racial diversity.
One way to include racist attitudes in the setting without shoving racism down
the players' throats is to use racially-based gangs (only orks, only Japanese
metahumans, etc).
>From what I've read to date, the Nipponese (people from [in] Japan, rather than
the Japanese ethnic group) seem to be more metahuman- intolerant than just
about anyone else. I can see this happening as an extension of the group-based
Japanese philosophies, which might also explain the Nipponse magician-phobia.
Questions -- aside from racism and sexism, what other -isms might there be in a
SR society? What about social class-related discrimination? Or anti-mage
sentiments? What else? How common might ethnic-based racism be?
