Former U.S. President Richard Nixon passed away this evening from
complications resulting from a major stroke he suffered earlier this
week.

Dispite being a fairly staunch liberal, I personally have a tremendous
amount of respect for Nixon. If you set aside Watergate (which I
personally believe was blown out of proportion, and really wasn't any
worse than any other president, before or after Nixon, had done, he was
jsut unlucky enough to get caught), Nixon was one of the greatest
peacemakers of the latter 20th century, and as recently as last month was
still the peacemaker, visiting Russia in the wake of their first free
elections.

It is a shame that history will only remember Nixon for Watergate, and as
the first (and so far only) U.S. president to ever resign the office,
because it overshadows the many other things he and his administration in
the light of the cold-war of the early seventies, and his post-presidency
activities.

Nixon was 81.

Didn`t Nixon end the united states involvement in Vietnam?

My knowledge of US politics are very scarce.

Yes. He did. When he became president, there were a few hundred thousand
US soldiers operating in or around Vietnam. he was the president who brought
them home.

Yep. "Surrender with honor", or somesuch. He also opened relations between
the U.S. and China, and I believe did some fancy economic footwork to pull us
out of a recession.
I wasn't alive during Nixon's time, and due to an abnormality in the teaching
of U.S. history, I never really had much chance to look at much past WWII.

Count yourself lucky. There's slightly less backstabbing and plotting here
than in the Tir, but not much. (See? See, Rob? This _IS_ SR related... :) )

Egil asked:

Yes, but not until dragging it out through this first term and exculating the
war by bombing both Cambodia and Laos.

>>My knowledge of US politics are very scarce.

This is hirtory, not politics. On the political and presidential level, Nixon
was a genius. Unfortunately for his the price of genius was paranoia so great
that he destoryed himself.

Still, Nixon was a great president. I'm glad that he may now go and be with
his wife, Pat.

Mr. Nixon was a great diplomat and his death will be mourned.

I am not very good at history either. I know the high points, of course,
but then, who doesn't.
