I always had (and still have) trouble picturing why they're
actually _there_ on a shadowrun... Shadowbeat doesn't help
there either, because although it gives more background to the
archetype it doesn't explain why they'd go on shadowruns. They
can make just as much money and with much less risk by making
albums, and really don't need the "hands on" type of approach to
making the world a safer place, IMHO.

The best way to play a rocker would, I think, be as one of the
alternative campaigns FASA's been pushing since the Companion
came out -- a few (or all) of the PCs as rockers, a few as
bodyguards, and play out their adventures, which don't really
involve shadowruns.

Unless of course they suck. Or just aren't especially good. I know a number of
starving musicians, you know... Other reasons are, they might be nuts, or need
"the experience" for their music.

Heck, I once made up (though I never got to play) Wild Oscar, an Ork
playwright (specialty: black comedies). Had followers (the avante guard
community) and some cyberware. He wasn't a big combat monster, in case you
couldn't tell.

That said, *I* don't really see the point of them either. Never tempted to
play one, nor has anyone I know been. Then again, maybe it's bcause of the
illustration by the archetype... They could be fun in a less combat-intensive
campaign (like for example the my current "ShadowZone" game).

[why do musicians run the shadows?]

Yeah, but that still doesn't really explain why they have night
jobs as shadowrunners instead of working at a McHughs (which is
about as dangerous but you don't need any skills for it :) IMHO
what does work is a shadowrunner who plays in a band as a
hobby, but musicians who run the shadows for a hobby is a bit
weird.

First let me say I can;t believe I'm defending even the idea of the rocker
archetype, which I've always thought terribly lame. I must be too much of a
devil's advocate for my own good.

As opposed to all those other, *normal* shadowrunners?

Most wouldn't be in the big leagues. Not even *real* shadowruns, at least not
at first. More along the lines of Dirk Montgomery... and he gradually gets
brought into the big leagues, as he adds cyber & skills.

Speaking of which, anyone out there run a game starting with low-level proto-
runners who gradually advance to real runners?

I've GMed a few where they start out as low-level proto-gamer munchies
and eventually evolve into real role players....

Close Enough?
