First let me say that I was pleasantly stunned this morning when I opened my
mailbox and found the massive reply this topic received! Well, perhaps not
stunned - this group can always be counted upon to lend their help in
problem areas, especially when it's a new idea that hasn't already been
discussed to death 2 or 3 different times. I've downloaded that pdf from
Plastic Warriors that somebody suggested and I'll be giving that a look here
in a moment...

So the general feeling I got seemed to be in support of separate tests, one
for skating and one for the attack itself. But not too many of these tests,
which I agree with 'cause while she is a fast learner she is still brand new
to Shadowrun and I wouldn't want to turn off a potential gamer. She's
responded pretty well to D&D so there's pretty good hope for her here.

Anybody have any feelings on the concealability, or is it basically agreed
that since there's really nothing to hide it's an inconsequential number
anyway?

As with all things the biggest will be playtesting of course, but now I've
definitely got a really good feel of how I want to try it first off. Again,
thanks to everybody who's contributed on this. All of the replies have given
me different very good aspects to think of. I'm opting for the KISS method
as far as the skates themselves, but that's mainly because my own group
tends to get too bogged down if you make things overly complicated.

Thanks for YOUR .02¥

indeed, if it were myself, I'd come up with something for the 3
different types of blades though, aggressives are going to be more
damaging when kicked with, easier to balance on, but slower,
recreationals are your regular ones, and speed skates are going to be
harder to balance on but much faster.....that'd be where I'd go from
there....perhaps with aggressives a +2 to their TN on the balance test,
with only a 4.5x multiplier for run, with recs being a standard balance
TN and a 5x multiplier, and speeds being -2 for balance and 5.5 or 6x
run multiplier

According to James Mick, on Wednesday 11 August 2004 15:19 the word on the

I think that was me. I wonder why I mentioned it... :)

I'd probably only have her make a Skating test if the Unarmed Combat test
fails -- this will keep the number of additional rolls down, and will also
add a bit of extra tension to failure. However, the methods others have
suggested are equally usable; it just depends on what kind of flavor you
want this whole thing to have.

Just get her to play SR before she starts learning too much D&D :)

If a character is just wearing rollerblades, then Conceal isn't an issue,
IMHO. The skates are pretty obvious, but they don't have any hidden stuff
that needs a roll to spot -- unless, of course, they do :)

I never treated the skates as a weapon, per se, resolving their
damage like brass knuckles (unarmed attack power increases by +1 or
+2). They were completely legal. We gave them a conceal rating for
noticing that they were rollerblade/boot combinations. When the
wheels were retracted, a Perception test (TN 5) was needed to notice
that they were not just very thick soled boots. Additional successes
would also allow the observer to notice things like the Impact armor
(adding 1 to overall armor a la forearm guards, with 4 Impact armor
against called shots to the foot/ankle), the Ballistic armor ( 2
points versus called shots), and the melee hardening.
