I agree with Ubiquitous - I have found that playing "normal" people can be
great fun - you just need to take them out of their "normal" circumstances.
Admittedly, they may not stay "normal" people for very long after that
though.
The last time we did it in Shadowrun, the GM has us design ourselves as
characters (labtech, high school teacher, electrician, college student and
part-time shop assistant) including that we knew eachother from the local
RPG club, then said "OK, you run into each-other while doing your
last-minute Christmas shopping at the Arcology mall....."
