Umm where do you get this figure from?

Rome was founded approx 753 BC, but little expansion
was achieved until Marius and Sulla in the 2nd Century BC.
As for the Empire proper, the first Emperor of Rome
was Octavian/Augustus, Imperator in 19 BC, and the
Roman empire as most people know it, ended in c 378
AD with the defeat of Valens at Adrianople.

Even if one were to take the fall of Constantinople in 1453
as the final end of all remnants of the Roman empire, one
gets maybe 1500 years, but this is really stretching credibility
to the max, and even remotely considering the Holy Roman Empire
of Charlemagne through Frederick The Great is just laughable.

If you are going to make historical comparisons, try to get
some accuracy please..

Pete, as your own post indicates, there are a lot of possible start and end
points for Rome. You're right in questioning the length of time, but it's not
as if the original poster said that Rome was founded in Turkey or something.
He doesn't need quite that high a degree of flame-age. My two cents.

You might want to check you calculator before ripping my post apart
and nitpicking on one small detail. 753 BC to 1453 AD is 2206 years.
And I did say "roughly" and "one form or another" for a reason.

Damn I hate it when I forget to finish writing mails and hit the
send button. It should have said:

And generally when people speak about the Roman Empire it is not just
limited to the period of time where it was actually ruled by
emperors. Empire in this context was used as in the State. AFAIK
there is no word to indicate a continuous existence of a country in
it's various forms of government in any other way.

Sorry about the extra mail,
