A group of us were discussing this, and for Shadowrun we decided "Big trouble in
Little China" was a great movie. I never really thought about it before, but it's got
everything - powerful immortals, magic, machine guns and triad wars.

There's this Japanese movie I saw once about how a corporation deals with the local Yakuza
- the Yaks were using a whole bunch of rep-busting tactics on the company to extort money,
and the company in turn used a bunch of political maneuvers back on the Yaks. Quite an
interesting movie. Shame I can't remember what it was called.

I've never seen it but could this be Black Rain? I've meant to break down and
watch that movie for some time. Big Trouble was a good call, which I can't
believe I forgot. Especially since most of the characters my brother makes
come off more than a little like Jack Burton. ::grin:: Just another couple
suggestions that come to mind would be Art of War and what's the one with
Snipes/Connery based on a Crichton novel...the name escapes me but that might
be worth watching. 'Nother duh-huh by the way, Robocop. I mean, c'mon here,
Detroit owned and run by a megacorporation that even owns the cops, Murphy is
definitely a cyberzombie who is somehow retaining part of his own ideals and
spirit as it were. It all screams Shadowrun. Maybe the Universal Soldier
movies? If nothing else the Unisols might make a good background idea for a
really nasty campaign...

"Anti-Extortion Woman", IIRC.
If it was a japanese movie about a hotel that was targeted by the yaks, and
the hotel hires a woman laywer to help them out.

The director did a lot of movie that exposed the Yakuza and the corrupt
government.
Shame he was found dead, appearently by suicide, in his apartment.

I know the one you mean, but can't remember the title, either :( Although it
should be mentioned it's one of those movies where a westerner seems to
out-Japanese the Japanese...

You're taking the words out of my mouth :) I read it in someone else's post
and thought, "How come I forgot that one...?"

I think you're both refering to the film 'Rising Sun'. Mind you, the book that it's based
on by Crichton is IMHO even better- besides, I often prefer books to the films. Gives a
good idea on Nipponese corporate attitudes/practices. Certainly helped with playing
Japanese corporators. :)

It's a series not a movie, but has anyone seen La
Femme Nikita? The teams in that always struck me as
what SR teams should be - Organised!

I would add "Million Dollar Hotel" and "Hackers" for their atmosphere.

"Million Dollar Hotel" was a bit drawn out and encumbered by its own
wierdness, but it has that same seedy quality that Bladerunner had. And
you'll never see Mel Gibson in a more... unusual.. role.

"Nikita" is originally a French movie (the American title is "La Femme
Nikita") and remade as "The Assassin" (with Bridget Fonda) in the US. The
series came after both movies. IMHO the original is the better of the two, and
I can't say I like the series much.

I don't think "Leon" was mentioned, BTW. (I thought of this one now because it
was made by the same director as "Nikita" and I've heard that it's supposed to
be a sequel, in a way.)

"The Assassin" is known as "Point of No Return" in the USA, not to

Rising Sun.

Other movies:

Hackers, Freejack, Barb Wire, Harley Davidson and the
Marlboro Man, Demolition Man, The Fifth Element, La
Femme Nikita, The Professional, The Saint, The Usual
Suspects, any Bond flick.

As for TV:
the Agency (about the CIA), and Dark Angel (despite
its weirdness, it is set in near-future Seattle).

That title reminds me, though - Assassins. In fact I'd like to end up in a
game where the GM pitted runners against each other like that. Definitely the
kind of backstabbing gamers are told to expect but seldom actually see.

Maybe in your group it's seldom seen. I had a group consisting of an elf
decker, human gun bunnie (had a few less morals then your average street
sam), Elf street mage, and Troll Merc.

The decker was a street punk with a datajack, and the street sam was all
attitude.
They got along great. Problem is, they didn't leave the street attitude at
the door for a Johnson meet.

The troll and mage were all business at the table. Needless to say, the
group spilt.
Luckly, the Gun bunnie has left the group and the decker's grown up a
little.

It's worth seeing. Some good ideas there, if now a little dated.

Yep.

Cyberzombies again. Still a decent movie.

"Heat" is good for how shadowruns play out with their consequences, as
is "Ronin" (depends how much law enforcement you like in your game).
Both get you the "hire a new guy and find he's incompetent" angle,
"Ronin" adds more of the double-triple-backstab routine while "Heat"
is
good for how 'runners might end up talking to the cops (and how trying
to outgun the law is a strictly short-term gambit)

"Killing Zoe" is a great but often-overlooked movie for low-rent
shadowruns. Especially for a couple of skilled 'runners who find
themselves trapped in the middle of Amateur Night with no obvious way
out...

Actually, isn't "The Professional" to "Leon" what "The
Assassin/Point of No Return" is to "Nikita"? ie.
"Nikita" and "Leon" are the original French films,
while "The Professional" and "The Assassin/Point of No
Return" are Hollywood remakes?

Nope. I confirm, "Leon" and "The Professional" are the same movie,
directed
by Luc Besson.

Sort of. Leon is known as the more correct term in this context although it
was marketed to US audiences as the Professional. The much, much, amazingly
better version though is titled "Leon: The Professional" and marketed as
the uncut international version. This would be the most definitive version
and includes a good deal of extra material that greatly adds to the story.
Most likely they cut that to up the level of action for American audiences
assuming they'd rather have that than a more intelligent film as so often
seems to be the case.

And, as someone else mentioned as well, "Leon" is called "The
Professional"
in the US. This is a hugely confusing bunch of movies, title-wise :)
