Most of the Battletech novels I've read have stayed pretty true to the game
as far as combat is concerned. Most of the "real" action, of course, is
behind-the-scenes politics and maneuver, which is rarely evident in
Battletech games. Big robots shooting a variety of weapons at each other may
not sound too exciting, but the descriptions in the novels are quite
visceral. When a head gets blown off by an ER PPC, I could just hear the
"shit, he rolled boxcars... twice! WTF?" in the background. There is even
one instance of the novels rewriting the game's rules by adding the "I Am
Jade Falcon" maneuver and Triple-Strength Myomer (or my personal favorite,
the "Highlander Burial", even though it is only a standard death from
above). Killer. Maybe I'm just a Battletech fanboy, but I feel that the
novels both accurately portray the universe and the combat of Battletech
game.
