I was considering writing up an adventure to start a mini-campaign in
the middle east, however, I have realized one thing. Nobody has written up
Middle Eastern critters! This is rather suprising considering that there is
an excellent source for them in "The Arabian Nights" and other books. So my
question is, are there any Middle Eastern sourcebooks on the net for
Shadowrun, or if there aren't, does anybody have any tips for running a
campaign in the Middle East?

I don't have a clue as to what critters you'd want to use. As for
magic, you may want to expand upon what Steve Kenson wrote in Magic in
the Shadows, specifically the Qabbalistic and Islamic magical
traditions. If you come up with something nifty, by all means share it
with us.

As to the social situation in the ME, your guess is as good as mine.
Do a lot of research and try to make sensible extrapolations. Remember
that VITAS may have hit some countries or regions worse than others.
Also, wasn't there a nuclear strike somewhere at some point? Not sure
about that (all I'd have to do is check the main SR book, but I'm
tired, so I'll let you do it).

Yeah. On Libya, which is in North Africa. Thus, most of the Mideast wouldn't
be affected.

Take a look at
http://members.aol.com/talonmail/arabian.html
and
http://www.divnull.com/lward/sixthworld/middleeast/

I think between them, you'll find more than everything you need to know.

Phil

I just don't want to die without a few scars, I say. It's nothing any more
to have a beautiful stock body. You see those cars that are completely stock
cherry, right out of a dealer's showroom in 1955, I always think, what a
waste.

As mentioned, Libya and Isreal exchanged chemical and nuclear attacks,
repsectively. In addition, the Germany sourcebook describes a "Great Jyhad"
(or something similar), that united pretty much all of the Islamic nations
in the Middle East. They formed a military association called the Alliance
for Allah, and invaded Europe through the Balkans. They got to about the
German/Ukranian(?) region, and were turned back by Germany/Russia/MET2000, I
think (this is from memory, check the Germany sourcebook). They still own
half the Balkans. And pretty much all of the Middle East...

Considering the rabidly anti awakened attitude that these fine folks have,
you can imagine the barrels of fun metahuman and magically active characters
could have in the Middle East.

Also, considering the expansionist nature of this Alliance, you can bet
Greece, situated next to Turkey (which is part of the Alliance) feels some
pressure at being the front line for most of Europe. And with Israel
sitting splat bang in the middle of the Alliances territory, there's bound
to be significant tensions in the region. Especially with that demonic
spawn of the devil great dragon Aden lairing at Mt Ararat after demolishing
Teheran...

I like the Shadowrun Middle East region <evil GM grin>.

Actually, you may be wrong there. Magic in the Shadows says that the
Islamic countries see magic as a gift from Allah, even a blast from the
past when Islamic sorcerors kicked butt. The canon line is that magic
is respected in all areas except those controlled by the extremist
Shiite sects. They _do_ presecute and kill magicians and metahumans.

If you go by what's in the book, whatever metahuman prejudice there
is is social, not religious. Which is nice, given the current media's
tendency to demonize Islam. Makes for a nice change.

The interesting (and convenient) thing about the Middle East is that
there are numerous countries all with radically different laws and
mores; right now women, for example, are treated better in Iraq than in
Saudi Arabia. So in SR, if you'd rather have religious zealots
antagonizing metas, you can! Just make it unique to that particular
country. It'd be a great way to keep border-hopping players on their
toes :)

Hmm, yes, I stand corrected - MiTS has official standing over the Germany
Sourcebook. (I've just finished running a big event in Germany, and have
read the Germany sourcebook about 3 times in the last 5 weeks.) <Damion
reminds himself to (re)read core rule books again>
