After a substantial break from gaming (and Shadowrun in particular),
some of my old gaming group has reconstituted itself. I was hoping to
start running the Harlequin adventures. We never made it all the way
through with the old group, which seems a shame. My current worry is
translating the old 1st edition decking in the first adventure,
Physical, the Hacking Sylvan scene, into 3rd ed. decking rules.
(Un)fortunately I've managed to avoid any significant decking in the
campaign so far, and the old campaign never implemented the new
Host/Grid rules from VR 2.0 before we stopped (yes, I am that rusty).
Anyone have any advice on translating this or any other aspect of the
Harlequin series into 3rd ed?
Thanks,
-Tev

Normally, what I've done when translating SR1 matrix
hosts into VR2 or SR3 hosts was:

- take the node with the highest security level and
use that as the new host rating (ie: a CPU red-6 makes
the new Host a red-6),
- use the highest rated Access program and add it to
the host rating to get the new Access rating,
- use the higest rated SPU or CPU rating number and
add it to the new host rating to get the Control and
Index ratings,
- use the highest rated Data Store node rating number
and add that to the new host rating to get the Files
rating,
- and add the rating number of the toughest slave node
to the host rating to get the new Slave rating.

The IC that's listed in the old node descriptions can
be used to fill out the security sheaf. The order in
which the IC will appear is fairly self-evident. The
trigger steps at which the IC may appear would be up
to you and how nasty you want to be.

Admittedly, this isn't perfect. It usually makes the
new Host harder than the original, but the old IC
keeps the level of actual danger to the decker
relatively minimal. Personally, I've always felt that
Hosts that have been updated to later editions this
way have an older, somewhat archaic feel to them that
the decker can feel or percieve - the old and
out-of-date IC, the less-than-glacial response, the
increased difficulty that results from having to work
through partly outdated architecture, and the almost
universal representation of the Host through the old
UMS symbols rather than modern sculpting.

Just my 2 nuyen.
