I have a char who just burned 1 point of Magic on cyberware (alphagrade
smartlink II and an alphagrade rangefinder). She has 2 points in Magic
(-1 from Essence loss) for being a Mage (ick, don't get any more magic
loss! `:) and that leaves 4 points for being a physad. The character
works out rather nicely (IMO).

When she initiates, I'm going to put it into the mage portion. (Which
makes me wonder ... She had originally a 2 Magic rating as a mage. If
she tosses in one more magic point into being a mage, but then gets
another point of magic loss from cyberware, will she still be a mage?
(Ie, it would reduce her original magic rating to zero but would the one
grade of intiation save her?)

Also, how would the different grades of cyber differ in appearance in so
far as an assensing is concerned? Would it be harder to detect the
function of the better grades (ie, Delta)?

Umm you have a starting character with seven essence? 1 to essence loss + 2
to mage +4 to physad?! DAAANG!! I wish I could initiate during charachter
creation.

1) intiation during character creation is a GM call and varies with each
GM's game.
2) you missed the part about "(-1 from Essence loss)", didn't you? :)
That's a 2 starting magic -1 from the cyberware which equals a magic
rating of 1.

Why did I set the mage end with such a low rating? Because I wanted her
to be mainly a PhysAd who summoned spirits but had room to grow.
Unfortunately, because of the low magic rating, drain from summoning
spirits is going to be a pain (literally :)!

I think Ghost was referring to the fact that (per SR3) conjuring a
spirit with a force over your magic rating causes physical drain (which
can't be magically healed). That could cut into your run fun. Pain
resistance is nice, but it doesn't prevent brain death from cumulative
trauma. The big advantage I see to being a phys-mage; adept with spell
defense. YUMMY!
