I am contemplating buying the Seattle Sourcebook. I'm pretty strapped for
cash but I'd like to have a more detailed viewpoint on Seattle. I was
wondering if anyone out there who does own the sourcebook can tell me
whether it's worth getting or not.

I was also curious if it's anything like the London sourcebook. I bought
the London sourcebook before and I wasn't too satisfied because it was
pretty dry. Don't get me wrong, it was really detailed and had a lot of
good campaign hooks but it wasn't presented a really... (forgive me for
not having a better word) fun way. I wish they would have talked about a
few more things in there. For instance, how about those knights in Tir na
Nog?

Anyways, I'd like some advice on whether to buy the Seattle Sourcebook.

Thanks,

Dust

Yes, it's worth it, unless you already have descriptions or pre-thought out
visions of certain places. In which case, just ignore the FASA published
versions anyways.

Because Tir na nOg isn't in London, or in the United Kingdom.

I'd vote the other way...its only a listing of various bars,
restaurants and industries. Nothing a talented GM couldn't come up
with in 10-20 minutes. The only advantage it offers is an actual
idea of WHERE the bloody districts are in relation to each other.

I would definitely say Get it. The Seattle Sourcebook is probably my
single favourite sourcebook (easily in the Top 5, the rest of which
goes: Corp Sec, Corp Shadowfiles, NAGRL, and Lone Star). I know some
Seattle natives aren't totally impressed with it, and it's by no means a
perfect product, but I'd say it's worth buying. ASitting down and
reading it all the way through, I could actually picture Seattle in my
mind, and what it must be like for Shadowrunners living there. Sure
helps when creating new characters and developing old ones. I know it
may not be true to real-life Seattle, but this is just a game. This is
the version of Seattle that will exist in the Shadowrun world; this is
what's there to play in.

On the other hand, there is talk of a Seattle Sourcebook 2 coming out
soon. This is, AFAIK, planned to update Seattle on all the changes since
the first one was put out about 8 years ago. You may wish to hold off
buying it until then and get the new version, depending on when your
campaigns are generally set.

Wow. See what happens when I check my email with no lag? I get chatty!

I believe Dust was referring to the Knights of Harlech, which guard
Harlech Castle, home of the Countess of Snowdonia, which is in Wales, not
Tir na nOg. Just a few facts at your fingertips... back to my library now

I agree. The SSB2 probably would have better maps and maybe some great NPC
types. But... You could get a Map of Seattle (not a call for map posts,
unless you have a URL to get one please) and get the same idea of where
everything is in relation to one another. Like, the fact that it takes about
1.5 hours to get from Everett to Puyallup at 100Kph (62Mph)!
The Seattle Source book *is* useful, I live in Seattle and I use it. Because
FASA is really using Seattle as a template, to really get the feal for
Seattle in 2051(2,3,4,5,6,7,8) you need FASA's version of it. A map will
show you where things are, but not how the gangs work, or the bars and
resteraunts and the local government, as it were. Also, the Map of the 'plex
is functionally different than a map of today, Arcologies, Nuke waste lands
etc..

here's my take.
If you're running a campaign now buy the book. It's useful and you can
worry about SSB2 if it actually comes out. Or you can convince one of your
players to buy the SSB2 if it comes out and just use the enhancements listed
as compared to your book.

Hey, keep in mind FASA Mike was saying SSB2 has a projected release
date '99.

That may be long time to wait for someone who's looking at whether
they should purchase a sourcebook now. :o)

It's useful to flesh out where characters live, since you get an idea of
which neighborhoods are good and bad. Another thing it's handy for is to
get somewhat of an idea of the layout of the city (it helps if you
photocopy the maps and paste them together), and for quickly generating
meeting places -- "Mr. Johnson would like to meet you at [GM grabs Seattle
Sourcebook, flips pages] Covington Rent and Rest Hotel in [flips pages a
bit more to find district this is in] Auburn."

That would be a very handy addition -- just look at how many bars,
restaurants, shops, and other businesses close or move in 8 years IRL. Not
to mention the shadowcomments should be a bit out of date by now...
