Does anyone know if FASA was planning Renraku Arkology shutdown since
1st edition? I just picked up Seattle Sourcebook and noticed some pretty
good foreshadowing.

Probably not. If you read any of the sourcebooks you can see tons
(TONS!) of plot hooks that never get mentioned again. Likely they
did plan it ahead of time, but I wouldn't think they'd have thought
about it as far back as SS.
'Course, I'm wrong more often then the Golar family on Family Feud,
so what do I know? :)

My guess is that the original SR crew at FASA were planning on doing
_something_ with the Arcology, but whether it was letting an AI take it
over, I don't know.

FASA was obviously planning something with AI in the Arcology from the
beginning. Keep in mind, however, that the AI rumored in the Seattle
Sourcebook is actually the one that now hangs around with Dodger. The story
of Dodger discovering her and helping her escape is told in one of the
novels (the very first, trilogy, I think).

I do not think FASA had Deus in mind from thin beginning, though. Instead it
was just a seed of "Renraku is messing with AI in the arcology, and have
been having some success."

It's kind of like the "something going on in Tibet" idea. FASA has a concept
behind it, but a) it is not fully formed and b) it may never see the light
of day.

Ehhh... I thought the AI -did- take it over, as it
states in Matrix. (Autonomous Programs: True
Artificial Intelegence; Dues. Pg. 151-152)

It did. The question was if this was somehow foreshadowed in the
Seattle Sourcebook published in 1990. Not if it happend in Renraku
Arcology: Shutdown (published in 1998).

Well yes, but that's not an answer to the original question, which was
along the lines of "Did FASA plan this takeover since 1989?" To which my
reply is that they most likely didn't -- they probably had a few ideas for
what they could do with the arcology, but with the changes in leadership
over the years, I have a feeling Mike Mulvihill's version of RA:S is quite
different from anything the original SR team might have had in mind for
such an event.
