JAPAN - KOIZUMI PUSHES RIGHT TO FIGHT (JUN 06/ASIA)
ASIA TIMES -- Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi is making a
priority out of three national-security bills aimed at allowing
Japan's forces to defend the country more freely, the Asia Times
reports.
The three bills have been under discussion in the Diet since May 7,
and Koizumi hopes to have them through both chambers by the end of
the current session on June 19.
The three bills consist of a law on the establishment of a Japanese
security council, a revised version of the Self-Defense Forces law
and a law specifying measures to deal with armed attacks on Japan.
The legislation would put enable the prime minister to declare
martial law, authorize the Japanese forces to move and operate
without restriction in the event of an attack, and make the prime
minister the commander-in-chief of the Self-Defense Forces.
