I found out something yesterday. Who here has read the new novel by
tome Dowd? Okay, I haven't but a friend of mine has figured out where
the stronghold of shadowland is. Exactly. In the book, a character is
blindfolded, and taken to shadowland. My friend counted all of the
turns inthe book. He and a couple of friends retraced the route in a
car starting on Academy Boulevard in colorado springs. With all of the
turns included, he arrived at one of the largest halls on the grounds of
the Air Force Academy in colorado springs. I'm told that in the book
the scene outside is described as a large building that houses a large
computer installation. The surrounding buildings could have been dorm
rooms, offices, and tennis courts, or words to that effect. The hall,
which I cannot remember off hand, is like that now, with only the
additional lecture halls on the top floors.

Says it would be the perfect place, since the ucas isn't using it
anymore.

Scott Madaski,
You and your friends have way too much free time on your hands. Still I'm
sure Tom Dowd meant for that to be the location of Shadowland. It would have
been too large a coincident for you to get to a place just like the one in the
book when you followed the directions. Still, to steal a little of your
thunderI don't think those exact directions would work in 2054.
Mostly I think it was an inside joke of the author.

I have not read the book but have a few questions

First of all he counted the turns right?
but how could he count the places were they didn't turn

Now since they could have been incorrect at this point could not
have some of the turns been turns in the road but not changes
in roads ( ie figurative 9th street turns and hits 6th street then
if you turn again you are on 6th - two turns but only
one street)

this of course would be a much better question if I read
the book.

More accuratly, it was suggested that if Shadowland was a real
boil on the collective hides of the corpers, it would go the way
of the dino,dodo,whale etc.

Well, firstly, I _hate_ Findley's writing.

Secondly, Falcon might *think* this is so, but Falcon has as much
net savvy as your average brownstone, so believing him is kinda a
funky thing to do, y'see.

Sortof... let me put it this way. Shadowland has got a hell of a lot of
resources behind it. And, regardless of who controls it, the corps would
undoubtabley use it to spread misinformation.

Hoi, Chummers:

My name is Kevin Knight and I run Sword of the Knight Publications. We are
embarking on a project to bring you Shadowland, the official Shadowrun
support magazine (replacing the now defunk KAGE). We are in need of
submissions if the first issue is to make it out by the end of summer. If you
have any questions or concerns, please email me directly at
SwrdKnght@***.com. Additionally, we will be honoring all subscriptions sent
to KAGE so if you had a subscription with that magazine you will have a
subscription to Shadowland. Thanks for your time.

Hi everyone,

Apparently Shadowland is up and running again. Being the internet addict
that I am, I was really spooked when the server went down and the Sysop said
the system would have to be moved.

Anyways, everything seems okay for now.

Shadowland? There already IS a Shadowland? I was building one myself! I
was creating an interactive archive for the Web named Shadowland (project
went on hold when school started). Please tell me more about this
Shadowland. What is it?

waste any time subscribing to Shadowland. It has fiction, it has toys, a

Well as you brought the subject up.
It is out retail. Arrived the same day as the latest ED journal here.

Also there is a FASA review of VR2, checking in 2 mins under
'technoshamen' suggests its just a view of the matrix as we (well
from posts most folks i think) had hoped, no magic in the machine.

Glad you liked it. Sorry about the tyrosine thing -- that's what I get for
writing the article on MAOIs from memory and not consulting PDR before I
sent it off. Next drug article will be checked more carefully. And there
will be more, I can assure you...

Opinion, Mr. Spock? Or does anybody here read EDJ and sub to the ED list?

Well, more or less. It seems to be a philosophical basis for dealing with a
peculiar phenomenon called the Deep Resonance. Apparently otaku, or child
deckers, experience the Deep Resonance while jacked in -- it's sort of like
achieving nirvana or seeing the true tao. You can't explain it well, so
they created two schools of thought to deal with it. One takes a mystical
view, the other takes a hard-edged techie view. Should be interesting to
see the full writeup.

OTOH, this means I can't send off my Smart Frames article until VR2 comes
out. (Is that like VR5? Frag, I miss that show...)

I only seen it a couple of times, but VR5 was pretty cool.

Speaking of smart frames, I just came up with an idea. What if you could
design a frame that other people accopanying the decker could control.

What do you think?

What if you could design a smart frame so the PC's accopanying the decker
can control the smart frames.

That way everyone would actually have something to do when the decker
decked. I don't know if it's that feaseable, but I thought that
would be a way to defeat the PC's saying "Oh god, I guess I'll go watch
TV." Of course I don't think it takes that long in the first place,
(20 min) but my players are impatient.

Sounds like a good idea. They would probably need some computer
skill, but.

One thing that works wonders is kepp the deckers essence very high
and have a monitor screen operating, when you trash the Black ic but
take a bit you flash 'Treat spell please' on said screen and get
cured while jacked in. Has been tested, on the UB of all folks!

Yeah, sure I have. The problem is the hitchers don't actually get to
anything. Basically they get to watch the decker do stuff and maybe
offer advice. Hence if they had control of a smart frame, they
actually get to participate.

www.shadowland.org?

Don't know, don't care anymore. I've had to create my runner in the "Meet
the Runners" section three separate times in the last month. Create it,
save it, log off following the instructions. A few days later my roommate
tells me that 20Questions got wiped again. I've given up on that site.

Yes, I know this is *way* off topic, but can someone can comment on Java, please? What
exactly can it be used for?

Another question, is it possible to set up a web page that can search for data on web
pages? For example, Edge Runners is located on Paulo's web page. Could you type at a
prompt and have a link provided?

Thanks in advance for the edification.

First off, Please! set your margins to 70, or press return at the end of
every line.
I find it a pain in the arse trying to read 288 column displays on an 80
column display.

As for the Websearching....
I think you'll find Netsearch does that. There is also Yahoo, Webcrawler and
a few others.....
Sorry, I don't have the URLs...

I'm using an 80 column display, not a 288 column one.

As for the websearching.
Try Netsearch, Yahoo search or Webcrawler. I think they'd do it.

Java is a language that allows cross-platform running of various small
'applets' little mini-programs that make animations and sounds to start, I'd
wait on it tho, they'res a number of security problems (which are now being
patched) and Mozilla(Netscape) uses it but it's slow and a pain on certain
machines. If you want animations use the new Gif89a format that animates.
It 's a bit better. If you use Netscape I'd disable the Java console until
they fix it, the Atlas they've released has the fix but it's a first beta
and buggy as hell, also you'll get no support for it as it's Betaware

Ya you could, that's basically hat the various search engines are for like
Lycos, Yahoo or Infoseek. Get an HTML writers book it provides the howto..

BTW While I'm no expert I work at an ISP in Tech support.

And now back to Shadowrun...

I don't know if anyone here is familiar with Shadowland, but it's a web
based site kind of like a bbs located at www.shadowland.org. They've just
recently upgraded to Shadowland 4.0 written entirely in JavaScript. I was
just wondering if anybody on this list has gotten in to see it recently,
because I don't seem to be able to. I'm using Netscape 2.02 (I can get
ahold of 3.0 if I absolutely need to, but it hasn't worked either). As
far as I know, there's nothing substandard about the browser I'm using.
In any case, I can call up the opening screen just fine, I get the big,
surrealistic picture in the main window, and the notice "now reading
client file, please stand by." After that, nothing. I've waited from 5
to 20 minutes for something to happen, and nothing has. Does anybody know
what I'm doing wrong?

Java, not JavaScript.

I'm on there right now, and it's *very* cool (though it's still in Alpha test).

I'd recommend using Netscape 3.0. You need to be on a 32-bit platform, so
if you're on Windows 3.1 or Windows for Warehouses, you're out of luck.

Put your cursor in the frame that says "Shadowland 4.0 Alpha" at the bottom
of the screen. It should tell you your progress in loading the Java applet.
Once it's loaded, a login window should come up. You'll need to create an
account from the "Create Account" hyperlink before doing that, though.

Do you think it would run under XWindows?

If you don't have the Java pugin for Netscape 3.0 or MS Internet
Explorer, you won't see anything. Netscapes java plug in is available
from the netscape Home site, MS Explorer is available from the MS home
site... get either of them and it'll work fine.

That was happening with Scam and myself when we didnt have Java set up
(and yes we had to use Macs to run java) so maybe thats your problem....
1) Did you make a new account?
2) -Could- you make a new account? (ie was the java applet visible?)

Thats all I can think of... except that even being in Australia it took a

One point I forgot to mention... it isnt JavaScript... its full-on
Java... therefore if you are set for JavaScript (ie Netscape 2.02) it
still isnt visible.... try netscape 3 and make sure you install java

Shadowland is at http://207.77.72.155/ , which is www.shadowland.org for
those of you with really up-to-date DNS (like best.com); however, you may
get timeouts for a while until your DNS catches up. (I was a little worried
when "telnet www.shadowland.org 80" got "Connect: connection refused"
from
work and worked fine from my Best account, but then I checked the DNS and
found that they disagreed as to www.shadowland.org's address...)

Just a question. Is there anyone on this list who also has access to
Shadowland? (that's www.shadowland.org, a web-based bbs for shadowrun
players) It's been in Java for a while now, so I haven't been able to
access it because my school doesn't have Java support. Anyways, there's
someone I need to contact who I can't reach except through there, so if
anyone has access to it, please contact me privately. tia

The one thing I noticed about the issue is that finally are using a smaller
friggin' font. They still don't use smart quotes, though, which is
typically a sure sign that they known next to nothing about electronic
publishing. Sorry, pet peeve, especially since it takes all of five minutes
to convert them.

Way to much fiction, which the new editor rants about a bit.

Tell the editor about it -- if he receives more than one comment about it
(i.e. more than just mine :) he might start to think about it...

Agreed. SL has always had too much fiction, I think, but if the new editor
feels the same way maybe it'll change.

I did several months. Well, I suppose the FAX I sent them may have been on
the cryptic side. Maybe the new editor will pay more attention.

My issue came with an offer to purchase books for several gaming
systems, including a few KaGe issues...are you missing any?

Does anyone know when www.shadowland.org will be opening up? Like, a

Okay runners, I'm going to try one more time before I give up on this and
stop wasting bandwidth,...

Does anyone know when Shadowland 6 (http://www.shadowland.org) comes back
online? This was always my favorite hangout for shadowrun stuff, and I was
wondering if someone here knew more.

From what I gather, until they can find a place to giv ethem a lot of room,
the Shadowland.org is dead in the water, from what I remember

Crap,...this was one of the better sites out there, together with things
like deep resonance.

Anybody else here interested in seeing shadowland come up? Evidently
there's some work being put into it because the image that was there last
time I checked isn't on the main page anymore. I can't even connect to
www.shadowland.org/users/ which used to have the message "Bad! You
shouldn'e be here. Go away."

Anyone know what's up?

Hrm, I don't have repro on, why did this come back to me?

Of course, I didn't send it from the address I'm subscribed to the list
under. Doesn't that mean the server *should have* rejected it?

Maybe it's finally in it's final stages of completion. I, for one, would be
glad when it's up again.

The nifty graphic is down because Dave can't type right now, and so plans have
been started to put SL6 back up. Go to www.egroups.com and find the
shadowland-users group and subscribe yourself, or read the Shadowland Seven
thread on the DR Forums

Do the GMs out there treat Shadowland as a Global PLTG with
teleporting SANs?

Thats the only way I can think of handling the network under canon
rules.
