Heya :] I don;t have all my books handy, nor do I have all the relevant
books, so I figured I'd survey the list real quick :]

I'm looking for a few details on Shadowland. Specifically, how old it is
(f they say) and any other info on the creation of it.

Thanks :]

I think this is covered in the Denver Sourcebook about the Nexus. I don't
have it handy, but I remember the early incarnations of Shadowland existing
now, but it didn't truly come into its own and present incarnation, until
after the crash, when the Egg, Nexus etc tapped into
the new Matrix.

Kinda sorta.. going off memory here..

The US had decided to quash that irritating idea known as "Free
speech" once again. But instead of being all draconian about it, they
were SNEAKY. They went to the academic institutions and quietly
promised continued government funding for academics , as long as they
were "responsible" for what their people put on the web/newsgroups,
and what TRANSITED through their servers.

The institutions couldn't take the 'Net piecemeal, so they cancelled
the whole thing, which of course is EXACTLY what the Government
wanted. As the number of "Hubs" available kept shrinking, the whole
thing became overloaded. However, a number of private nets stayed
together. Collectively, they were known as the Egg. They resisted all
government attempts to control/monitor the goings on.

This, of course, had the government in such a tizzy that their frilly
little undergarments were tied in a knot. Especially since
Hacker/Anarchy/Warez sites were such a big part of it, some with
Neo-Anarchist leanings, such as a board called Shadowland. The
government decided to take direct action in an attempt to make the
rest bow to government authority.

They found an access code to Shadowland and cruised on in, intent on
finding it's physical location as well as trashing/tapping everything
ON the board. However, the government was in for a rude shock, as
primitive IC left them with smoking computers and egg on their face.
They decided NOT to publicly hunt for Shadowland, as it would be
tantamount to admitting that they couldn't control things.

However, those who were in the know heard of SL's defense and quietly
contacted them and learned how to do the same things. Since then, it's
been trouble for authorites, be they corporate or governmental in
nature. However, the prevailing wisdom is to use it to the fullest,
since taking it down now would require a nuke, and even then, it's
believed that they have some last ditch core weapon that would
recreate the Crash of 29.

Hope this helped

Don't have my books nearby, but this is what I remember. Shadowland
originated from the pirate Internet sites of today. They used proxies
and rerouters to connect to each other. When the crash of '29 occured,
due to the number of layers they had put between them and the Internet,
most of them had time to disconnect before it affected their systems.

Do the GMs out there treat Shadowland as a Global PLTG with
teleporting SANs?

Thats the only way I can think of handling the network under canon
rules.

In a word, No.

It's a moving PLTG of sorts, yes, but it operates backdoors that are
constantly being moved in order to have system remain secure. You still have
to know the "address" in order to find the site itself at any given time in
our games.
